Preferred Gen 3 year/model?

I'm really looking for a good Gen 2.5 to build from but not having much luck. It seems the Gen 3 does OK for overlanding/exploring, is there a preferred year? Quite a few Gen 3s to look at a reasonable distance away. Is there a reference that spells out the different generations?
