new MacBook vs Retina MacBook Pro

I have a desktop computer I built myself for work that runs Windows 7 and Linux Mint. But after spending all day working on it, it's nice to be mobile (and out of my home office) once I clock out.

This is the first MacBook I've ever purchased after a brief experience with a Mac Mini a few years ago which ended up being sold due to unexpected expenses.

I'm used to 8GB of RAM and a faster processor on my desktop so this entry-level Air was a downgrade for me, but I only needed something to check emails, browse the web for entertainment, watch videos, and do all the other day-to-day stuff one does when not actually using a computer for work. I chose a MacBook because I love the aluminum body and the build quality and the operating system is better than the current disastrous Windows 8.1, which all newer laptops are coming preinstalled with. I didn't want to wipe the HD clean and install another Linux distro, I wanted something I wouldn't have to customize much or mess with, so this fit the bill.

It serves its purpose as my entertainment PC very well. I rent videos from the iTunes store, watch music videos, check Facebook and Twitter, browse websites, yada yada yada...you know the drill. It performs excellently and is fast enough for what I need it to do with my 50mbps Internet connection. Plus did I mention the operating system is such a relief to use after a brief, nightmarish period of using Windows 8 and 8.1?

Overall I am satisfied and happy with my purchase.

Kellyho, I'm a bit unclear on which MacBook you are using. Is it the brand new MacBook, or a current gen MacBook Air or perhaps a MacBook Pro (doubtful based on your RAM/CPU comment)?

Reviews of the new Macbook are appearing around the web this morning -- check your favorite source.

Several reviewers use the meme "laptop of the future" to describe the Macbook's amazing thin and light construction, higher resolution screen, and Force Touchpad. The reviewers then point out that we still live in the present, where the Macbook's relatively slow performance, shorter battery life, and single USB port will cause problems for some laptop users. So the Macbook Pro remains the better choice for some.

Wired puts the question like this "...when the MacBook is more expensive and less powerful than the Air, and [the battery] doesn't even last as long, what's it for?"

And provides an answer "...the new MacBook is for the future. It's a vision of our next computer, the one we'll buy when our Airs or ThinkPads can't keep up anymore. The MacBook is a work in progress: The processor and the battery will improve, and the price will drop."

Personally, the Macbook fits the ways I use a laptop, and I'm not concerned about a single USB-C port. (there's a multi-function adapter.) The shorter battery life is discouraging, however.

I am most bummed by the lack of compatibility with their own displays. I suppose I should just connect a third party HDMI and power at 4k? In reality, I am almost done with the laptop as a necessary tool. iPad Air with Bluetooth keyboard and then an iMac at the office for image processing
