Atl-atl's Dodge Ram 2500 Regular Cab Long Bed "documentation" thread.

Hi all, been lurking here for a year or so and finally decided it was time to step up my game. I've got some build threads over on a VW site but I've never really done one for my truck and I will need the help of a place like this I'm sure! I've had this Ram for just about two years now and have slowly been modding it/wheeling it while I also use it for work. I'm slowly transition out of the field(commercial superintendent) and into the office so I'm using my truck less for loads of "work" and more for loads of "fun!" I do a lot of remote car camping with my friends that all have pretty capable rigs and decent camp setups. I also do a lot of cycling/skiing/hiking etc. so you'll see some of that in here, Ill try to relate it to "expeditions." I also mess with R/C and have been wanting to build a scale crawler to match my truck, I think that qualifies here also. The real kicker for starting a thread here was my recent purchase of a Four Wheel Campers Hawk which I cant wait to tear into! Its old school, not sure what year, and needs some work so a lot of this thread will probably document the rebuild of the Hawk. I cant decide if I want to hike Grays and Torreys this weekend or start work on the camper.

The truck is a 2008 Dodge Ram 2500HD SXT 5.7 4x4 regular cab long bed. Its a stripper base model, manual everything and rubber floors, I love it. I bought it with 150,000 miles and it now has about 170,000 on the ticker. The previous owner installed a power inverter in the cab, a leveler in front, some crappy white body shocks and some worn out 33" tires. I immediately stepped up 35s and painted the steelies black. Shortly thereafter I bumped up to 37s. It gets about 8mpg so I'm happy when gas is below $2 hahaha. I don't know what the PO did but the truck was filled to the brim with tan dust inside and out. It took me a while to clean it all out of the interior and under the hood. I removed the front swaybar and have extended bumpstops in the rear which I was planning to remove along with the overload leafs because they don't let it flex enough. The front flexes like a ******** and the 37s only rub on the control arms even at full stuff. Gotta love stock offset wheels! Now that there's a camper involved those plans might change. The only maintenance I've had to do is rebuild the driveshafts and change the oil. I damaged the front bumper on some rocks while out wheeling one day so I trimmed it and have been getting quotes for a new bumper to be fabbed. The to do list is really long but is now changing in the direction of camper/camping so stay tuned if you want!

I usually take tons of pictures so Ill update this post with more soon!

Nice truck! I am in love with the look of single cabs. Had your trucks twin for a while and now have a 04 2500 silverado single cab. Still wish i would have kept the dodge though...

NICE

i love the standard cabs- real trucks have two doors and an 8' bed. im partial though, i have a ram 2500 standard cab hemi with carli suspension, powerwagon rear locker, tru trac fron, 4.56's, and winch hidden behind the stock bumper. im running 37's too! wish i could have found one in white with the rubber mats and manual windows. these trucks are kinda hard to find. looking forward to seeing more of your build.

Thanks guys! I love regular cabs too and since it should just be my girlfriend, myself and the dog for a couple more years the regular cab will do just fine. Plus the 3rd gen Dodge reg cabs have a lot more room behind the seats than most regular cabs. I can put a tent, blankets and some other misc. gear back there and still have room for the pup to lay down, stretch out, move around and be comfortable on long trips. Lee, I would love to have 4.56s and lockers, super jealous of that!

My idea of camping. I could tell you where it is but, you know the drill.

So I removed my spare tire holder and tool box in preparation for the camper. Do I leave the crappy plastic liner in underneath the camper? Ive heard they won't fit but thats probably for a modern camper that uses more space in the bed. This camper is older and has been narrowed to fit newer trucks. Also it was meant for a shortbed and Im putting it in my longbed. Any insight? Should I throw this liner up on craigslist? Its got some holes and cuts in it, the sides warp all over the place when its hot outside. All in all its pretty terrible.

Oil eater.
You can just trim a rubber bed mat a tad or remove the crappy liner and drop the rubber bed mat in. A guy in www.dieseltruckresource has some Thuren 1/2" longer control arms for sale. Best in the business with the bend in them. I was blown away recently with a Dodge with Carli's full leafs. They were the 1500# ones combined with Carli's LT airbags.
I special ordered my truck from Dave Smith in 10/06. I choked and didn't get the carpet delete though.

Thanks for the info Regcabguy. I listed the liner on CL and will ditch it when I mount the camper for good. Ive been off and on looking at getting Thuren arms and some better shocks but now I might wait and spend some coin on the camper.

Here are pictures of the camper. I'm trying to pick it up tonight so I can get it somewhat ready to use this weekend. I scored it for $400! It needs some work but overall its pretty nice for its age. Which btw I do not know, forgot to look at the tags when I saw it. I think its late 80s? It has been narrowed by some previous owner to fit into modern trucks. I don't know about bedrail height either so I will bring some 2" foam insulation sheeting from work with me just in case when I try to pick it up tonight. The owner said it never actively leaked but he thinks over the winter it had some ice/water creep in as evidence by the pictures. Its minimal but the front lift mechanism probably needs to be replaced. I think the canvas can be cleaned. I do want to replace the seals around the pop up so I will need help with that from the people reading this! The operable windows all work, all glass and other misc. parts are in tact and functioning. There is minimal wiring, just two lights on the inside, a couple on the outside and the heater which supposedly all work but I haven't hooked a battery up to try. I will likely keep the wiring this way with the exception of modernizing it to run LEDs and making sure nothings going to catch fire. I rarely stay out for more than two nights so I don't really need the electricity like some people. I camp to get away from technology not use it!

First things first is a full interior and exterior cleaning. Then new mattress, seat cushions and upholstery. Update the wiring and install some LEDs. That's about as far ahead as I've thought. Im not going to mess with the sink/water tank/pump or cooktop just yet. Any suggestions or help is welcome!
