PICTURE THREAD: Post up your Mobile HAM setups

I've been running an Icom IC-V8000 in the dash of my 4runner for a few years now. It's been a great radio. I would like to go with a dual band radio next, as 440 is getting more popular in my area.

I wish this thread would have had more responses. I am a future ham and would like to see the antenna mounting configurations. com'on guys let's see some pics. how do you guys deal with trees and brush. with my CB I have a spring on the antenna but I really don't see that with hams. highdesertranger

I have the dual band Larson NMO 2/70 with a spring, it's taken a serious beating and never been a problem… except for that one and only time I ran the truck through a car wash. That didn't end well.

The radio is just a Yaesu FT8800 bolted to the centre console.

I've been "planning" the HF set up for way too long. I acquired an FT857D several years(!) ago and still haven't done the install.
My friend Jason at Cruisin' Off Road built me a cool mount for a Scorpion screwdriver antenna that mounts to the bolt holes for the stock spare tire mount.

Just clears the spare on the swing out:

I gotta get off my butt and finish it off.

I will post pics, just a Kenwood 281 2m, with an NMO 2/70 mounted just like this, without a spring, and mine has held up nicely. No hf currently.

I run a IC706MKIIG with an ldg at7000 autotuner into a 12.5' whip for HF on the rear & a comet sbb5 for vhf/uhf on the drivers side passenger door with a diamond super KNMO mount. LMR240 for all HF coax & RG174 for the vhf/uhf

From my build thread:

Yaesu FT-8800, Garmin 60CSx and iPad mini. I am running MotionX HD on the iPad and the GPS is connected to a Byonics TT4 and Yaesu FT-1500M for APRS (The FT-1500 is also for backup 2m duty). Two coax runs up to the roof using Larsen NMO mounts. With the rack in the way I couldn't mount the antennas to the roof, so I had to fabricate some plates to attach to the rack. Given the lack of a ground plane I had to use half-wave antennas. Antennas are Diamond NR770HB and Larsen NMO-150.

So far so good. Ran a magnet mount previously which also fine but coax routing not permanent.

My 2012 Tacoma is set up for both VHF/UHF and HF. The radios are from Icom. An ID-5100a takes care of VHF and UHF while an IC-7100 with an LDG IT-100 auto tuner can be heard on the HF bands.

Both of these radios have remote control heads. They fit nicely in the front storage area of the Tacoma's center console.

IMG_0495.JPG

The main unit of the IC-7100 and IT-100 fit under the drivers seat while the ID-5100a's main unit hides under the "puppy platform" that replaced the rear seat.

IMG_0486.JPG

Each unit has had it's microphone cable rerouted to the center console as well. The ID-5100a's is on the driver side.

IMG_0492.JPG

and the IC-7100's looks about the same on the passenger side.

The microphones each hang from their own custom mic hook attach the center vents. (Ok, ok, so I just bent one side of a binder clip)

IMG_0496.JPG

There are four antenna wires all RG-8x that run from under the platform to the rear of the bed an terminate in bulkhead connectors there. Two on each side.

IMG_0490.JPG

The driver side antenna mount is set up with an NMO mount and is currently sporting a Larsen 2/70B. This antenna can take a beating but depending on the trail and the range I'm expecting I'll swap it out with a much shorter Comet dual bander.

IMG_0500.JPG

The passenger side is set up more for HF and uses a standard 3/8" stud mount. If anyone knows where I can get a heavy duty stainless spring in black for a 3/8" stud mount, dont be shy.

IMG_0501.JPG

That's 3/4" split loom wrapped around a heavy duty firestick spring.

I keep a collection of mono band ham sticks in the overhead cargo net.

IMG_0489.JPG

The bulkhead connectors in the bed make it real easy to swap things around or even go stealth by leaving the antennas inside the cap. But when set up for camp I can run wire antennas up in the trees and connect them to the radios from the bed.

When I run in daily driver mode or dont plan on using the radios, I can make the radios disappear in no time removing the control heads. Just taking the mics out makes the cab nearly stock looking.

Wow, dBeau!

Great setup! Could you post up a pic or two of your rear antenna mounts? I'm considering something similar and would like to bend and weld two up for the rear of my Cruiser. Getting them to fit in the door gap and remain solid is a little tricky.
