flip-back build

I just finished reading your whole thread and I am rather impressed with your ingenuity!

I work at McMaster-Carr up in Aurora so I have definitely been considering building something like what you did, using our catalog of neat things! My lack of expertise with sewing is what has primarily stopped me from acting on this intention.

I have a 2016 Nissan Titan XD with the Cummins - I was gonna go with the Ecodiesel Ram but I read too many horror stories of engine problems. So I will get a bit worse MPG but have higher towing (12500 lbs) and payload capacity (1750 lbs). I specifically bought the vehicle with a trip in mind about 4 years from now, across all 50 states plus a good piece of Canada, in a row over the course of a year. Your homebrew version of a Flippac is what I was leaning towards for MPG, payload reasons, lower costs, and the all-important necessity for simplicity of building and therefore fixing.

Do you feel that the cantilever'd tent design would be able to handle the wind load on mountains and so forth? Given that I am not super far away, how might you feel about my coming to see it in person, and also maybe contracting out some of the work to you?? :)

Do you notice any appreciable MPG drop when driving with it?

(This is my first post on these forums after years of looking, so your thread did a good job of breaking me out of my shell!)

HEY Mike!!

Ive camped in it on the beach at assatague with 30mph winds and had some gusts come thru at other spots...I would say it could handle 40-50 without much worry especially with the tension cord setup on the new orange top!! as far as durability of the top itself in heavy winds the shell wouldnt even blink at it..

Sewing isnt hard..it just takes time because the quantity of fabric your stitching! and Im offering replacement tops for guys with Flip-Pacs so making one for you wouldnt be a problem..

I wasnt super thrilled initally with my only 1/2 ton choice being a Ram...but shes grown on me and Im happy with it at 60,000 miles since I got her..and airbags helped out my load capacity (Ram put very soft springs in the back for a better ride...)..

the topper actually improved my Economy because of the wind drag effect on the open bed...but since its been on for the last 55000 miles its hard to remember what the improvement was!! LOL

the new tires did give it a mpg hit...I typically get 24 in town..im getting 22 now...but they are fairly aggressive...so its a trade off...She hasnt had much clear highway since I put them on...so no estimates on what I lost there if any...

We are having a meet and greet friday the 24th in columbus. its posted in midwest forum...next month I will probably tap someone up north to host one there...or Ill host another one closer to akron...not sure yet...but Im always wandering around somewhere..

if your active on FB..check out midwest overlanders we have a growing community in Ohio!

New toy!! Apparently every person who has a YouTube review has Carine (carnival people) hands!! I opened the box and was afraid I would crush this little guy!! Baofeng uv-5rv2+ and antenna...slick little unit!! Amazon whole setup with programming cable (CHIRP) was about $65....now to keep studying for my HAM test....i have been using a HAM scanner APP to see how much I would actually use a radio and I seem to have it on a lot living in the country..

I got several hours of playing with it and watching YouTube to program it manually and with CHIRP...straight forward and easy to use..such a slick little thing!!

Also FINNALY pulled the trigger on a GSI commuter French Press....first cup was Kona Coffee we brought back from Hawai'i on our honeymoon 2 years ago...

My God

So smooth and creamy...because the press keeps all the oils and fats in the cup with the grounds...I'm turning on my heated seats tomorrow and going to truly PRINCESS my way to work tomorrow....(heated seats are also amazing smooth and creamy...wait..that's too weird..)

So I've had an issue with not enough padding before the exped megamats..and we used old carpet padding triple layered for a base..which is annoying when we break camp as its a foot thick 4ft wide padding roll..

The top also has screws that poke thru..and I wanted to have extra protection and insulation...

So out came the spray adhesive and bubble foil insulation!! I think this might be a good addition to the guys running RTT that have mattresses that compress to the wood after 2 days..

Great thread. Your abilities make the projects look easy and give me all sort of confidence to try it myself. That tent is on point and I like the simple fab'd shell.
