The government of Peru is so concerned about possible effects of an El Niño winter (heavier than normal rainfall) that they have withdrawn the Peruvian sections of the 2016 Dakar Rally. So the organizers have re-worked the route, staying in Argentina and Bolivia.

This year, the organizers have included two "marathon" stages, in which competitors must park their vehicles in a compound away from the team mechanics. Any repairs must be done by the drivers/riders themselves. It's OK for competitors to help each other, however, so the big teams still have an advantage.

The northwest corner of Argentina is a beautiful place to visit. From the ancient Yungas forests, highland Puna grasslands (home of Alpaca, Vicuña and Guanaco), soda lakes (dotted with flamingoes), the high desert geology, and ruins of the Quilmes people (a civilization that pre-dates the Inca), northwest Argentina has something to interest just about everyone.

I can never get enough of the Dakar thanks for the update for 2016....
It can be hard to get much coverage/Video's here in Canada when the race is on...
I love the big Trucks the best...

In the racing section on advrider there a few Dakar threads each year (a full on firehose of information thread and a coles notes thread). Without question this is the best way to follow the race (for both cars and bikes).

Is it January yet?

What a race this year is going to be.

The established team Mini is most certainly a contender...Nasser in particular.

The new Peugeot looks awesome and the team is stacked with Carlos, Peterhansel and now Sebastien Loeb. Oh and Despres who is learning the ins and outs of driving a car.

Giniel has a new engine in his Toyota, always a contender.

Yassez is a Toyota is also a serious contender.

So....lots of people with a real shot at the podium this year. Rally Maroc starts tomorrow and should provide some good insight into the new cars, teams and drivers.
