Trasharoo, first impressions....

Then you're not putting it on properly. If the straps are X'd properly, you can't pull it off if you tried.

Both times the strap was used.

The first time it fell off, it was full of paper trash (4 days of camping) and we were flying down some roads in British Columbia taking hard turns.
I stopped after about an hour of that, and it was gone.

2nd time in pismo, I used the strap, and reinforced it with a zip tie. It was mostly trash, and one bundle of fire wood.
After about an hour in the dunes whipping the FJ around I had stopped and it was gone.

It was also the first time I was hearing that someone wanted to make it work with maxtraxx on the spare. People are often using the trasharoo to transport their maxtraxx.
I would never attempt to put Maxtrax into a Trasheroo, but there are specific bags for them that mount to the spare tire.
There are tons of pics out there with Maxtrax mounted to the spare tire like mine with Maxtrax's spare tire mount, and with a Trasheroo mounted to the tire with the Maxtrax in the middle.

The Maxtrax mount is very secure using their straps, so if I can get my Trasheroo to work this weekend mounted to just the Maxtrax, that will be great.

Great! My bad, sorry. But It works! So all is good when you set it up the right way! :)

Yep.
Trasharoo and the maxtrax mount works great, though a PITA to access the maxtrax under the trasharoo when you need them.
I'm going to fab up a roof rack mount to put them up there vertically with the mounting pins and a lock for easier access when I'm not using the RTT.

Jody bought two more maxtrax.

No problem.
I am hoping to bypass the spare tire altogether this weekend, and just run the straps through the Maxtrax.

Looks great.
I see you have a swingout too for the spare tire, makes it so much easier.
There is hardly any room on the FJ between the tire and the mount on the door.

I am determined though to get it working somehow this weekend, as my camping vacation is only weeks away :D

You say you are getting another set?
My first set was the same color, then I got a black set this year.
Now it is kind of like an Oreo cookie the way I have them stacked.

if you are going to thrash around like that and not pay attention to what's happening behind you / in your wake, maybe you should switch to the much more inexpensive 'Seabagaroo'

You make a website, put "Overland" or "LandCruiser" in the product title, maybe show pics of it on a truck with a RTT, BAM! instant cash.

This seems a lot more durable than a Trasharoo

Don't get me wrong, Trasharoo's a fine bag. It just costs more. You can get a Large-size ALICE milsurp backpack for $25 most places. Three big liter-sized pockets on the outside, a flat pouch inside the bag lid, a smaller pouch inside the back of the main bag, and a large main compartment with a large drawstring-equipped opening and a 33gal plastic trashbag works fine as a liner. Trasharoo's a little larger volume, IIRC. Maybe bigger around in the butt, too.

Yea but trasharoos look like they need to be replaced every so often depending on usage and how long it sits in the sun. Your solution looks a lot more durable, may not look as cool but im more about function over form.

Looks like you would be able to some how strap it to the spare tire if you wanted to.

Whatever happened to using a potato sack? We lined ours with polyethylene woven fabric (like a tarp material) and put a drawstring in it to close it and tie it to the spare (no need for installation instructions). Can't beat the price and it's easy to replace.

I was thinking the same thing.

I added some grommets to a burlap sack for tie straps/bungies. I stuff a drawstring trashbag inside sack and tie it to the spare. I've been using the same burlap sack for at least 10 years. Its been across the Rubicon Trail several times so I guess it qualifies as Trail Rated and Rubicon Tough. When it finally wears out I can replace it for less than $5.

I had mine hanging off a 35 on an XJ and a 30 and 32 on a JK. Yes I take it off and store it in the garage. Yes if you leave it in the sun it will change color (hell my XJ fabric seat covers changed colors from the UV).

If you strap it on wrong it will fall off. My first install it fell off right there in the driveway. I rewalized where I screwed up - the way I made the X I allowed for slippage. Afterwards - perfect. Never had issues since. Oh yeah - on the XJ the spare can do 360 though when the trasharoo is installed it only oscilates +/- 10 degrees from center. Never lost the trasharoo from it. On the JK I transported an old fashioned sled (wood metal with leg steering) from SoCal to Tahoe and back without any issues.

Not sure why folks had them fall off. Not sure why buckles broke for people. I have a $450 backpack on which a buckle busted. Stuff happens. Overall Trasharoo is a great product. Yes it costs money but tell me what doesn't. I paid for it IIRC $50abd couldn't be happier with it.

If you have issues with it - contact the folks at Trasharoo and talk to them before complaining about something.

One of my flap buckles broke in July, while in CO. I was on a washboard road with a full 11lb propane tank in the trasharoo. The part the broke was where the webbing feeds through and wraps around, so I was able to tie it off to finish the trip. When I got home I emailed trasharoo to see if I could buy a replacement buckle (since I have had it a couple years) and they sent me a replacement buckle free of charge. I was fully satisfied.
