Anyone out there enjoy this? I've gotten more obsessed with the skill/physics involved with accurately shooting long distances. Anyone else out there?

New(ish) to the hobby myself. Typically use one of my more "precision" oriented AR builds with a 16" .223 Wylde barrel. I also plink (and coyote hunt) longer 500+ yards with my Tikka 7mm precision hunt build.

I'd love to build a 6.5CM or another 7mm precision only rifle where I could not be so concerned with weight and focus solely on precision shooting and not have to be dual purpose. However, a 4.5mo old kiddo is absorbing the little hobby money I have remaining.

I drool over those Proof barrels...someday.

I've got a FN SPR 24" in .308; easily shoots sub MOA in stock form (no mods at all). I've taken this thing out to 700 yards with 168 gr match grade ammo. No break or silencer on the muzzle, not yet, so the recoil is a bit more noticeable, but still very fun to shoot. A bit heavy for hiking around with, but I do also use this for deer hunting, in addition to target shooting. A pic from one of my hunts:

Edit: Anyone know how to rotate the picture? Every time I post a pic, it shows up sideways.

To me there is a definitive line between long range shooting and hunting. My ethical limit is 400 yards. If i cannot get closer to the animal than that, i cannot call myself a hunter and provider and I do not deserve to harvest the animal. I have my .300 wsm dialed in for 700 yd shots, and I maybe shoot that far once or twice to say i still can, but i wont harvest an animal over 400yds. If my range finder cannot read the animal..no go. i fee llike shooting at an animal past 500 is just target shooting at a live target. To many variables come in to play and the chance of crippling the animal elevates.

I disagree. With the proper practice, the right equipment, and the right conditions, it's pretty straight forward. The ballistic flight of a bullet is predictable with these factors, and the only limitation would be the shooter's abilities.

Nice! I love the .308. I too shoot 168 gr. BTHP out of my Remington 700 SPS. Suprisingly accurate at 430 yds (haven't taken this gun farther than that) for being an out of the box gun.
It's also nice to not have to spend 338lm ammo prices when I want to go out and have some fun. :-D

I think that boils down to ethics vs abilities. Can you shoot the animal? Yes. Will you? Depends on who you are and what you feel.

Howdy. I don't get much of an opportunity to shoot longer distance like this, but I have a Savage .308 Id like to get dialed in a little better. One of these days I suppose....

I think it also comes down to: Can you reliably get the animal and bring it back? I think we all know people who are good shooters but lack the physical fitness or will to spend the better part of a day tracking and retrieving a kill that is half a mile away and across a nasty canyon.

And we have Grizzlies and those stupid wolves here. thus why i carry a .44 mag or my .454 cassul. By the time it took you to hike 1,000 yards to the animal , crossing ravines, passes, and boulders, they would already be on your harvest by the time you got there.

1296 yard elk, at the time it was the longest single shot kill and may still be the longest shot for a self-built setup, meaning it was not merely bought off the shelf. He is a neighbor and hunting buddy, video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyj_A19Zo30 He routinely takes game over 800 yards and builds rifles for others but not usually for profit, I have shot his 300 out to 950 yards and his setup combined with the ballistics app made it quite easy to accomplish. Oh, and he is very capable of hiking any distance and has packed out animals solo on several occasions. The area we hunt most has an average shot distance of about 220 yards between ridges, but you can easily see across several ridges with a clear shot. My personal rifle is just a lowly 30-06 that has taken a few elk past 200 yards, used to have just an old Bushnell Sportview scope but put a Zeiss on it this last season that cost more than the rifle, I zero mine for 200 yards due to where we hunt and am comfortable out to 450. I plan to have my buddy put together a 270 in the next year or so with a 26 inch barrel that will be good for 700-800 yards.

Yes, there are some pull and pray types out there who have no business attempting anything over even 100 yards, but if you practice often and know the ability of yourself and the weapon then do it.

Nice-looking setup. I came very close to going the Remington 700 route as well, but came across a FN SPR for a very good deal. How far have you gone out with that setup?

Nice! I love the .308. I too shoot 168 gr. BTHP out of my Remington 700 SPS. Suprisingly accurate at 430 yds (haven't taken this gun farther than that) for being an out of the box gun.

Yeah, I decided to start off the with .308 as I got into hunting and target shooting. A lot of self-proclaimed "elitists" in the long-range community are fond of saying that .308 is an obsolete caliber; IMO, it's a very good jack-of-all trades caliber...very good for a bunch of different applications but certainly not the best out there.

I've found 168 gr BTHP and AMAX (Hornady) have worked well for me all the way out to 700 yards. I'll probably try to take it to 900-1000 yds this coming summer. I'm tempted to give 175 gr ammo a try, but I don't know how well it will do out at distance with my barrel twist (1:12).

Recoil is a bit of a beast (for a .308) mostly due to the lack of a compensator or break. Other than that, the rifle, in stock form, is a breeze to shoot and plink targets with. Easily shoots sub MOA with match grade ammo.
