Anyone have any idea what that step is under the front edge of the bed?

I have camped with Bernard, the owner of Leitner designs, many times and I consider him to be a friend.. in fact we camped right next to each other last weekend. I got yet another in depth look at his rack system and will be picking mine up for my 04 dodge ram long bed within the next couple of weeks. Imho, you can't go wrong with his racks. The modular flexibility and the ability to use your truck bed to the fullest is really what sold me.

I just received my rack from Leitner Design's. It is very good at solving a problem that trucks currently have in this market. A top-shelf product that can support the expo life style. I have it mounted on a 5'7" bed on the Ram 1500 Ecodiesel. Total combo is barely 220lbs including rack and and ARB Simpson III RTT.

I need to figure out some sort of roof rack system that will mount in the bed, and still let me use my rambox fully.

I really want that Leitner but of course it doesn't work with the ram boxes.

I should never have bought the truck with the damn ram boxes. They never close right, no one makes accessories for the rail or the boxes, and they tend to leak. I wonder how much it would cost to get a normal bed installed.

Interesting to hear that. It seemed like a good idea for what is normally a lot of wasted space. Seems you loose some inside the bed space too.

That looks pretty good on an 8' Ram. The cost of that rack and the fact it wouldn't work with my toolbox are part of what kept me from looking into it further. How solid is it and can you show a picture of how it mounts from inside the bed?

Also just saw that their offroad rated weight is 250#. The tent I'm about to put on is ~300#

Here are a few pics I have on my phone right now. I can take more when I get home today.

I found a rack over at US Rack that works with the Ram Boxes. Unfortunately it only holds 150lbs.

I wonder what the static load rating is though.

Interesting. So it clamps to the bed rails except for the braces which bolt to the bed?
Exactly it clamps to the bed rails and has small supports at the front of the bed and the sturdier round tube braces in the rear. And on the 8 foot bed models it includes a middle brace to prevent any flexing. This is the highest quality of gear on my truck.

A shot or two of the load bars on the top.

i think i'm just gonna have to have one custom made the way I want, for my rambox truck. Want a higher load capacity for a RTT, and 4 people, and i'm not exactly a lightweight. The whole family together is about 650lbs, plus the weight of the RTT, kinda need to have a bare minimum load rating of 1000lbs. It will likely have to bolt to the bed floor, and I think if I have a 'foot' of sorts put on the mounting points on the bed, I shouldn't be a problem to put 1000+lbs on top spread out between 4 'feet'.

This is the moment that I wish that I had continued down the path of being a mech. engineer instead of leaving to paint guns. I could design my own rack and just take it to someone to make, or better yet, make it myself.
