Project Microtrac

Ok guys, i`m building the Quadrotrac for several years now, and i can`t see when i`ll finish it. So i decided i need something simple just to drive around. Since i can`t use the Motodog any more i found a victim pretty fast :

25008167js.jpg

The idea is to build a little tractor like thing, really easy and without rocket science, so there`s a chance to actually finish it. First mockup:

25008176dd.jpg

Cut everything off that i don`t need anymore:

25008190kw.jpg

25008203ks.jpg

Here`s the secand transmission that`ll go in. This gives me 18 forward and 6 reverse gears:

25008225ov.jpg

Here`s the input shaft:

25008232jv.jpg

Turned a flange with a register for the sprocket:

25008237hg.jpg

Flipped it around and turned a register for the input flange:

25008260qj.jpg

Transfered the holes:

25008264ca.jpg

Put it together nice and tight:

25008272ji.jpg

And welded it on:

25008281nf.jpg

The output sprocket is really beaten up, but i need the inner splined section. Btw. i know that the case is cracked. Someone repaired it a long time ago and it wirked fine since then. Since i said no rocket science i`ll leave it just like it is. Wait, maybe i`ll run some beads over the crack...:

25008288yd.jpg

It`s hardened so i put it in the oven to anneal it. :

25008294zg.jpg

Then i mocked up the front transmission mount:

25008308rg.jpg

Need to build th axle fist before i can start on the frame, so i cut off the drive sprocket from the Motodog:

25008315gz.jpg

Cleaned it up:

25008319aw.jpg

25008334fn.jpg

Flipped it around and turned down the other weld bead:

25008341rq.jpg

And pressed out the axle:

25008351dc.jpg

Then i reamed the hole:

25008365kd.jpg

Here`s everything that`ll be mounted on the axle:

25008371bc.jpg

Turned a flange for the brake disc:

25008393vi.jpg

All the finished axle parts:

25008406cq.jpg

Started by cutting the square tubing for the frame today:

25022591ir.jpg

Then i roughed out the front crossmember:

25022593jj.jpg

And bored it to size:

25022608fh.jpg

Then i turned the front axle bearing housing:

25022615hf.jpg

Welded it in:

25022620rq.jpg

And pressed the bearing in:

25022628ki.jpg

Tacked the frame:

25022642tf.jpg

And mocked it up:

25022643iy.jpg

Then i turned down the annealed output sprocket:

25022647pt.jpg

And bored out the new one:

25022650tg.jpg

Fit`s like a glove:

25022652en.jpg

Looks like i ****ed up something with the frame and the final drive:

25022655di.jpg

Now i like it better:

25022657ct.jpg

How it looks all together:

25022659ix.jpg

25022663rp.jpg

No real plans. Cruising around town and hoping there are no cops around maybe? Maybe i`ll also build a blade for it to clear snow...

Made some mounting plates for the axle bearings:

25034003av.jpg

Tacked them on:

25034008yu.jpg

Started turning the front axle:

25034010ea.jpg

Located the holes for the stub shafts:

25034012iv.jpg

And drilled them:

25034015kf.jpg

Turned the first stub shaft:

25034021wv.jpg

25034024vx.jpg

It`ll looks somehow like this. Will probably shorten the stub shafts a bit.

Cruising around town would be cool, here in the US I would end up in jail.

When I was a teen my dad and I made a trike with a BMX bike front end and a typical go cart type rear, I had a blast with that thing and it would go anywhere . I kept breaking the spokes and bending the rim on the front wheel.

Wouldn`t be too funny if i get caught by the cops here either... :Wow1:

Turned the second axle stub for the front axle today:

25122751uo.jpg

Tacked them on:

25122752ib.jpg

And mocked it up:

25122755qy.jpg

Then i put in a frame crossmember:

25122758zg.jpg

And made the rear tranny mount:

25122772tz.jpg

25122776mu.jpg

Then i made some tabs for the seat mount:

25122783vm.jpg

Bored out a piece of pipe:

25122804me.jpg

And pressed in some brass:

25122814nl.jpg

Reamed it out:

25122824cn.jpg

And put in a grease zerk. This wil be the pivot for the seat mount:

25122832ce.jpg

Also made some seat mounts and tacket them on:

25122835ag.jpg

Starts to look like something:

25122837sd.jpg

"Starting to look like something"
I'm not sure something is correct, "neat, cool, crazy, bizarre " maybe closer :)
Doesnt look safe for a 3 year old!

Started by notching the seat mount strut yesterday:

25142556kf.jpg

Then i put it together:

25142560ri.jpg

Made some mounts for the shock:

25142563ju.jpg

And welded them on:

25142566ul.jpg

Then i noticed that the spring rate was way too low, so i had to think of something else:

25142571ro.jpg

Now it works great:

25142573ns.jpg

Also need something to tow a trailer and a tow hook. So i took a plate and drilled some holes:

25142574my.jpg

Welded on a small rod eye:

25142576ig.jpg

And put it on:

25142581df.jpg

Today my rims arrived after going up and down through the whole country for the last 1,5 weeks. The tires appeared to be in a much better shape than it looked like in the auction pics so i decided to use them:

25142588eo.jpg

So it was time to machine some wheel flanges. Had a piece of 6" round that i cut in half :

25142589ip.jpg

Welded on some short pieces of pipe to grab it in the three jaw chuck:

25142596he.jpg

Turned the flanges:

25142610sf.jpg

25142614ue.jpg

25142616sz.jpg

And put in some centers for the bolt circle:

25142617uy.jpg

25142618et.jpg

Then i drilled them on the drill press:

25142623rp.jpg

Now i could mount the flanges on the axle:

25142627qu.jpg

And put the wheels on. Should be a roller by tomorrow.

25142633rj.jpg

25142641qr.jpg

Started by turning the front axle stub shaft today:

25151797tu.jpg

25151810er.jpg

This is how it`ll be mounted:

25151813lx.jpg

Cut up a rack and pinion steering:

25151823un.jpg

Turned a tie rod extension:

25151825dg.jpg

Should go in somehow like this:

25151829yu.jpg

Turned a bearing seat for the steering column:

25151832cw.jpg

Pressed in the bearing:

25151840th.jpg

Turned the upper part of the column:

25151856mr.jpg

All the pieces together:

25151867pd.jpg

For the steering wheel hub i cut off the end of an old vice handle:

25151871bl.jpg

Turned a register for the steering wheel:

25151877xv.jpg

And milled a snug fit square on the column:

25151895vo.jpg

25151915fs.jpg

Cut a thread for a set screw:

25151924ar.jpg

And welded it in:

25151931sf.jpg

The upper steering column completed:

25151952vt.jpg

And tacked in:

25151953gq.jpg

Aligned everthing in the lathe before welding:

25151958zc.jpg

Welded everything up:

25151966rk.jpg

Mounted the rack:

25151972vw.jpg

And the whole steering assembly mounted:

25151978eh.jpg

Only things missing for it to be a roller was the steering arm on the front axle. So i started by boring out some round stock:

25168384et.jpg

Milled on some flats for the bolt:

25168387jy.jpg

Slit it:

25168388el.jpg

And drilled the cross hole:

25168390yl.jpg

that`s how it goes together:

25168396xz.jpg

Was able to salvage a piece from the Motodog for the steering arm, just had to cut a radius:

25168401pb.jpg

And tacked it on:

25168402rw.jpg

Put down some welds to prevent it from falling apart when i remove the jack stands:

25168406ep.jpg

And then i just had to put the tank back on even if i didn`t want to use it. I have to say that i really like it:

25168407pq.jpg

25168410yk.jpg

25168412dn.jpg

25168414ik.jpg

Thanks. :bike_rider:

Build the clutch system today. First i mounted the pedal to some flat stock:

25178059zq.jpg

Cut a thread:

25178061zl.jpg

To mount the clutch handle:

25178063ud.jpg

Milled a bracket for the cable:

25178066sz.jpg

Tacked it on:

25178070jb.jpg

Finished:

25178074ff.jpg

Started with the brake pedal today. Had a hard time figuring out how to clamp it for milling:

25197775au.jpg

Worked out better than i thought it would:

25197777bg.jpg

Bend up a lever:

25197779qg.jpg

Tapped the pedal:

25197780km.jpg

This is how it should go together:

25197783et.jpg

Luckily i bought it like that. It`s about 220mmx500mm and has about 678 M8 holes.

Continued working on the brake today. First i turned a pushrod:

25333978nn.jpg

Milled on some wrench flats:

25333979bj.jpg

This is how it goes together:

25333980ik.jpg

Bent it a little:

25333984tv.jpg

Perfect:

25333985vr.jpg

Then i turned a bushing for the gas pedal:

25333987ir.jpg

And brazed it on the other half of the vice handle that i used for the steering wheel hub:

25333990rb.jpg
