I agree with the one bad *** winch instead of two medium winches - if you buy a quality large winch then it is only operating at a lower level of its rating and you are much less likely to need a back-up.
Very interested in how this was done as I am looking at doing the same thing with one of the surplus warn MRAP winches since my truck is 24VDC - 18,000 rated and "severe duty" rated. I think with some of the rear mounted winch setups there can be less strain on the frame and especially front end structure if its done right.
