Medical/First Aid Choices?

I'm definitely a fan of build your own;
I do first aid in 3 parts; a half dozen 3/4" fabric band aids in the wallet (to stop small leakers/drippers, and can be cut down to serve as butterflies with the SAK (Swiss army knife) in my pocket).
a clean handkerchief in the pocket (as successfully served as an expedient bandage for a wound too large for band aids).
.. a belt portable/hiking kit that includes some gauze pads and a gauze roller, along with some duct tape (rerolled from a large roll works for blisters if your catch them when they are still hotspots), some safety pins and a separate roll of Vet-Wrap (elastic bandage)...over the years the things used/"borrowed" most, on/by others, have been band aids and elastic bandages.
..A vehicle kit that includes all of the above along with some providone-iodine solution, Sam splint, eyecup, Aspirin, butterflies, soap, a spare set of glasses, a glasses screw/repair kit a magnifying glass (Fresnel), a triangular bandage, an antidiarrheal, some zantac, some sunscreen and assorted other large/industrial first aid kit supplies.
IMO triple antibiotic works almost as well for squeaking oarlocks as Vaseline but is not as effective as providone-iodine for wounds.

I don't worry about rattle snakes, when walking in the desert I almost always have a walking stick and watch where I step...mostly they warn you but not always...

Enjoy!

neat, i just stubled upon this thread, i just happened to put together a heavy trauma kit to keep in the rover everything just came in yesterday. chainsaw, hatchet, guns lots of way to get injured when out and about. for my frist aid kit i have just a red waterproof basic kit from walmart with bandaids gauze ice pack ect think it was like $20. this is the list i put together for my "heavy trauma" kit. just wanted a little better stuff than bandaids and small squares of gauze.
i put it all in a bright red molle pouch link to bag il probably stick on the rear hatch or something idk. i only put two pairs of the gloves in there i use those for lots of stuff.

Check out the local petsmart or somewhere locally where they sell horse supplies/tack; then pick up a roll of (3M) vetwrap (ace bandage for large animals) I usually get 4" or 6"; way cheaper than an ace bandage (you will give more of them away, to the needy, than you need yourself) and the second most used item in my Jeep kit...and they come in colors (I try to pick something ugly to keep people from coming back).
I think I bought the last bottle of providone-iodine from wallymart. Get a larger bottle (8 oz) and repackage it in smaller bottles or get 2 small bottles one for the vehicle and one for home. It lasts a long time and you will use it at home once you find that it does not sting... although they often have it in feed stores (widely used in veterinary and besides human medicine) the solution for animals often includes a dye that can be a bit startling and long lasting...
Double freezer bag the iodine solution for the vehicle in case of leaks... I found a small squeeze bottle that fits in the middle of the vet wrap roll.
If you can find Zee brand large fabric band aids, they are the best that I have yet found.

Enjoy!

Most first aid kits are for booboos. Nice to have but you'll survive without. Trauma kits on the other hand are something you should always have and know how to use. When **** goes sideways they're the difference between getting to help or bleeding out. Check out products form North American Rescue, Dark Angel Medical and my personal favorite for vehicle kits.

I picked up the Weekender kit from Outer Limits last summer, it is a pretty well equipped kit, and they now ship with the tourniquet.
I will have to pick one up for mine.

I have a kit from Outer Limits Supply. The owner is an EMT/Fire Fighter in Colorado and one of the club leaders for Rising Sun. He is extremely thoughtful in what goes into his kits and doesn't cheap out on anything. Everything is picked out with a purpose, and with quality in mind. Great peace of mind.

The best off the shelf kit I have found is the Adventure Medical Kits "Weekender". Too big for personal carry, but outstanding for the car or home. I'm an EMT/WEMT, among other things and I will say that the most important thing you can carry is good knowledge and skills that come from TRAINING. Invest time and money in training.

I really like the Adventure Medical Kits too, my main kit is a Sportsman Grizzly that I have added various things to and I have a small trauma kit in the center console that is mostly adventure medical kits.

On my last camping trip someone not in my group lost a filling or something and had major tooth pain, I realized that dental care is one thing I haven't really covered in my first aid kit. I'm probably going to add the adventure medical kits dental first aid kit to my bag: http://www.adventuremedicalkits.com/medical-kits/pocket-size-kits/dental-medic.html

The best off the shelf kit I've found is the Chinook Medical 1st Responder kit. http://www.chinookmed.com/cgi-bin/item/01425RD/AD-EPMKPRO/-1st-Responder-Kit

While doing research I found that lots of people were ordering their supplies from this company. When trying to build my own kit I was unable to piece together a custom kit or supplement an existing kit that was as comprehensive as this one. I created a spreadsheet listing everything I would want in an ideal kit, but I couldn't beat the price since things like bandages and whatnot I would have to purchase in bulk. Even though bulk was only a couple dollars more per item it adds up when having many items that wouldn't be used very often. I even was thinking about using the extra bulk supplies to build kits for friends and family, but the math still didn't work out with what would need to be supplemented for a complete kit for themselves.

As far as training I'm an Eagle Scout and being prepared is my motto. I do plan on taking the Wilderness First Aid course, but I feel studying first aid on your own in the meantime can save someone's life when classically trained help may be hours away. Even being trained you must show restraint when administering help. Remaining calm and methodical is the best you can do. Stabilizing the injured is the key goal until true medical help is available.

That looks almost exactly like the adventure medical sportsmen grizzly, I bet they are made at the same place
