Day 4 (last day!)

Today is the day. The day I leave. The day I get picked up by a jet boat and return to reality. But of course, pick up is not until ~1030/1100h and I wake 0530h. Lots of time to fart around. Unfortunately, no paddling. Drat. I was already missing it. Since the day before was Memorial Day and I did not pay my respects to the fallen, I decided to do the Murph Challenge WOD (Workout of the Day for you non-crossfit people). I brought my Murph patch with me on this trip. I laid it on the beach. Lathered myself with sunscreen. Turned on The Backstreet Boys on my phone and proceeded to Murph the **** outta that beach. I modified my workout in that I used a large piece of driftwood and did arm lifts (100) rather than the 100 pullups. I also did 200 crunches/leg lifts rather than run 2mi. I was not going to run 2mi in approach shoes in loose sand with cacti and in the blazing sun.

workout time!

By the time I was done, I was covered in sand and sweat and felt great. I wandered around some more. Laid on Naked rock some more. Ate my last Mountain House. Cleaned the inside of my kayak (as required by Tex pre-pick up). Unloaded the kayak. Took down my camp site and generally enjoyed my singular semi-nude state alone on the river listening to it rage past me.

And then I heard it. The buzz of a motor. My jet boat! They went by saying they were picking up paddlers farthest first. In the meantime, I put on more clothes and ardently awaited. They pulled up and the boisterous men were aboard. They saw me and all started chanting my name and cheering and lifting beers to me. Since I had such few items, they put my kayak on the back across the rear of the boat and all my gear in a storage bin/bench up front. The boisterous men gave me a beer and we were off! I left my camp spot. I watched it go by. I was going to miss it.

going to the next pick up spot

We picked up a total of 5 separate spots. The jet boat was packed full of people and boats. The canoes went on the roof frame, and kayaks in the back crosswise. We picked up the two kayakers from NM farther up. We also got the annoying teenage boy group, an older couple who seemed pretty ************. They had been on the river 5 days and she appeared to have MS. They do trips like this every year. How awesome is that?! What amazed me more than anything was the amount of gear and trash most of the groups used and generated. Holy ****. Seriously. A metric ****ton of stuff! I saw that and just wanted the boat to turn around and take me back to my camp spot. I did not want to come back to society. Such a wasteful superfluous society.

look at all that ****?!
20160531_112544_zpstbcwsgww.jpg
and even more ****. Look at the filled garbage bag! I filled a small ziploc baggy with my trash, most of which were the 2 beer cans from boisterous men

The NM couple gave me another beer. And we rode the jet boat up the Colorado River for 2h, stopping in Lathrop Canyon to go potty (at a real pit toilet!) and ending a Potash boat ramp. At Lathrop, when I stood up, I realized I was drunk. ****. Two beers and I was done for. The next hour of riding, I made sure to sober up and enjoy the scenery. Which was hella excellent. I think my next trip may be down this section of river: Moab to Spanish Bottom. What say you? Wanna join? 

Day 4 (cont'd): Summary

We got back to Tex's Riverways, unloaded the jet boat, loaded our vehicles which were kept at the shop in a fenced secured parking lot while we were gone. I procured my precious Starbucks Doubleshot Energy mocha drink from the shop frige and was a happy gal. I then drove off…to Boise…to finally get my shower.

Except that didn't happen. Jeep broke…nearly killed me on I84 at Rupert, ID and then finally gave in a mp138 WB…at midnight. I survived. Made it to the Boise area, dropped off the Jeep via a flatbed tow truck at 0330h and then a friend picked me up and took me to her place. By 0400h on Wednesday, I finally had my shower and real bed. My adventure was over. But I was too tired to care at the time. MY first real meal could wait till the next day….

BAM! The funny magnet the Tex staff loved.

All the trash I generated

I noticed by Day 3 I started to talk aloud to myself. I especially started singing. And you know what song stayed in my head and I sang the most? Disturbed's remake of "The Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel. Yes. I sang Disturbed songs on my paddle trip. And damn, am I good...in my head, hahaha!

I did this trip with some buddies last Oct. What an incredible stretch of river.

Like you, we used Tex's for the shuttle....great folks.

We went REALLY heavy. 4 dudes in two kayaks and a rented "T-Cat". While we had plenty of cold beer and food, I would attempt to go lighter next time. Treat it more like a backpacking trip.

Great TR....thanks for sharing.

I really enjoyed the Tex staff. They seemed to understand and appreciate my type of humour (dirty, foul mouthed and inappropriate), hahaha!

Wow, 2 person kayaks. I am impressed! I did treat it like an ultralight backpacking trip. I only brought the very bare essentials. I'm debating doing the Green River, UT to Mineral Bottom trip or Moab to Spanish Bottom trip next time. And I am not sure if I want adventuring partners or if doing it solo is my goal. Maybe try it with someone else next time just to see how much I like it, haha!

I am working on my video journal I made during the trip. But it is ending up being about 14min long. Perhaps I will make it into 2 separate videos...hmmmm.

Correction, our kayaks were both SOT singles. A WS Tarpon 120 and my "big pig" a Jackson Cuda 12. Your boat looked like a WS kayak....a Tsunami perhaps?
Not sure if you've seen the "T-Cat" set-up that Tex's rents. Basically it's two 17 foot alum canoes with a deck mounted in-between creating a catamaran of sorts. That worked-out great because one of the guys in our group is a non-swimmer so "the barge" offered some stability and huge load carrying capacity.

I understand what you're saying about trying the other "routes" in Canyonlands but fear nothing will compare to the Mineral Bottom run for solitude and scenery. Maybe doing Green River all the way to the confluence but we would need more ice mid-trip. :sombrero:

I wish I was a bit more tech-savvy and could post-up cool trip reports like yours. We had four dudes with cameras and two GoPros for our trip.

^I think you are correct on not finding a more solitude-filled route than the one I was already on. I saw the Class II rapids at the Stand on the Colorado Riv just before The Confluence. I kind of want to try that out.

I finally finished one of my videos. It is only of me doing the Murph Challenge though. The other video is so dang long that I am having problems saving and uploading it.

Here is the video:

Great trip report!

Can't wait to get on the river again. I'm doing Desolation canyon and Gates of Lodore this summer. :)

Great write up Mel. I know I ran into you at GONE, but we didn't properly introduce ourselves. Glad you enjoyed the trip, glad you did it safely. Sorry to hear about your Jeep.

And BTW for you and any others that are wondering, the big white flowers are called "Detura" or commonly known as "Jimson Weed", and is extremely poisonous.

Thanks for the info. Glad I did not touch those plants or explore them too much. Good info to know.

Yes, I meant to talk to you about your experience on this trip at GONE. Sorry we did not get a chance to chat. Which trails did you go on? Do you plan to go on more paddle trips in the Moab area?

I am attempting to plan a multi-day paddle trip here in southern Idaho on the Bruneau/Owyhee River area, but those rivers have some Class III+ to Class V rapids interspersed in the smooth areas. So that will take quite a bit more planning since it is also in canyons. I will start another thread for that trip.

Trails were:
Hell's Revenge
Metal Masher
Backwards Bill
Poison Spider
Steel Bender

We don't have anything planned as yet, although there are a few more multi day trips in Southern Utah that I'd really like to do. But if it's not flat water my wife will never go, I'd have to get my white water canoe buddy to go with instead. My boat is a tripping canoe really. 18'6" Wannoah, I digress, you already know that. Excellent write up. Congrats on doing it solo.

Great report. My son is wanting to do an overnight float and this really inspired me. One thing I will never understand is packing out your poop. I understand it was required so you had to do it. The idea of putting something that will break down into something that will not break down instead of just letting nature do it things seems wrong. I did like to see that you hardly generated any trash though and also the small amount of equipment you needed. I am also a Jeep driver and because of limited space you learn to pack light. I spent my first few years of in the Army in light Infantry and I suppose that helped with learning to pack light.

Thanks for the report.

Thanks!

I think the basis for packing out poo is that the ground is not consistent enough to be able to dig holes in some places. And that since it is a National Park, I think they want to try to preserve how pristine it feels without the addition of human fecal matter all over. My understanding is that roughly 10,000 or so people do this trip a year. And after a while, all that poo would build up.

I definitely treated this trip like an ultralight backpacking adventure. I tried to minimise weight and size as much I could. And yes, having a 2-door Jeep certainly helps in trying to pack optimally. I had serious mental back and forth moments in considering bringing my ruck. But in the end, it stayed in the Jeep during this trip. It was just too big.

I can see that as an issue.

What was wrong with your Jeep?
