Vario diff-lock retrofit

So I´m still dreaming/thinking about a MB 614/814/815 Vario. Currently I think my budget will not allow for a 4x4 version, so my question for you Vario experts is: could one rebuild/fit a 4x2 with a rear diff-lock?

Thx

I don't think 4x4s are much more expensive - just rarer.
The down side of them is they are slower and use a lot more fuel

Hi bigblue
Andy built a locking diff for his vario. The build thread is here:

Thanks I´ll have a look.

Right, I think I could get by with only a rear diff-lock, and get the benefits of the 4x2. Our 1986 VW LT35 is 4x2, but has a factory rear diff-lock, is has poor ground clearance, but still the lock has saved her few times.

The other advantage of 4x4 is the ground clearance & a better stance, that can be achieved by fitting 9.5 tyres but then you would probably need a lower ratio dif. or travel at 100 mph if the engine would pull it?:Wow1:
