Well now that I am getting more interested in overland travel and camping more than just wheeling one day at a time. I find myself getting on this site more and more for inspiration and tips for getting my trailer on the road. the plan is to have it road worthy by next spring. (Was trying for this summer but wheeling did get in the way) I will start posting my progress to this site from where I am currently but if it's ok to post a link so that you know what I have already done here it is: http://www.cherokeetalk.com/forum/f26/xj-camper-build-54809/ (Page 1-11)

Here are a few pics. of my progress.

Thanks me too, I hope I have done my home work! I want to be able to take it on trails that are mild to semi wild and spend some 3-4 day weekends exploring the state instead of just day trips spending twice the amount of time being stuck in traffic as on any trails, hiking or just about anything you'd rather be doing in the back country.

Spent some time trying to get a few odds and ends done to the frame, just a couple more to do before I can POR-15 it and slap it under the body. I finished welding up the cross braces, bore holes through the cross 2x4 so that I can run conduit for the wiring and mounted the trailer supports for when it's parked.

Figured out how I would mount my trailer jack so that it will be removable and can be locked in position when in use.

I'll be interested to see your final product. I haven't yet been able to convince my wife that this is an acceptable plan for my old XJ shell.

Finally have it to the point that I can put a finish on the sub-frame.

My wife just let's me do what ever as long as it doesn't affect our ability to pay the bills. But she does roll her eyes a lot.

trailer frame

I went ahead and mocked up the frame today. I found that the axle I am using for now the bearing were a little loose, so I pulled it apart cleaned and repacked them. Now I need to concentrate on the body.

The more I read other trailer builds the one common dilemma they have is with what and how to finish the exterior. By using the shell it will be solid and not very heavy, I hope to have it ready to title and use this summer.

My wife wouldn't stop me, but she'd make it known she doesn't approve. The biggest setback would be making the front look acceptable. Plus I really have too many other projects I need more time for. But I've got this XJ carcass I've been parting out, might as well use it for something since scrap is so low.

That along with possibly saving time are my biggest reasons for wanting to use it.

Saw a Trailer like that a guy on Pirate 4x4 built. I liked it, so well I saved the pictures of it.
Mainly because I have 1st Gen Trooper body I could use for the same thing.

I have some interior pictures of it if you're interested.
He put a fold out sink and fuel transfer pump where his side doors open.

I love these out of the box builds!:ylsmoke:

Yeah, I'm defiantly interested, Please post them or the address if that would be ok with this site. It seemed ok that I posted my UL. for all the work done before I started this thread. Now I am just updating both threads as I go. I have plenty of time to brain storm on the way I finish the interior. I want to build a over head cabinet with some kind of entertainment system in the front for those rainy days. Other than a conferrable place to sleep that is a sturdy shelter I don't plan on making the interior to elaborate.

Up-dating where we at on this build, Haven't had much time to work on it (work, Graduation and a myriad of things) but we have managed to mount the body to the frame.
