Oregon is close to us, and has the best weather for viewing the eclipse (we looked at Grand Teton and that area, which as also good but have a higher chance of thunderstorms in August.) We booked Solarfest in Madras, OR. $150 for 5 nights RV camping, right in the middle of the path of totality so we won't need to drive anywhere on the day of the eclipse. We probably won't partake in any of their "festivities", but will tool around John Day Fossil Beds, Bend and such for the weekend.

This is a great map to plan your eclipse viewing:

You can zoom in to the area you are thinking about, click on a spot, and it will tell you how much eclipse you will get. Many places will likely be sold out already (i.e. state parks). Many other towns in the path of totality have similar festivals, and will have camping available, though they will likely be busy.

Keeping it simple... I'll drive about 30 minutes south to Cascade, Idaho.

I've just about settled on a spot just west of Casper, WY.

I think this will be just about the sparsest civilization and best chance of clear weather to be had.

Rt 20/26 runs almost down the centerline of totality for about 100 miles from Shoshoni to Casper. I figure if I get set up that day but it is unexpectedly cloudy, I can easily move up/down the centerline as needed.

Wyoming is going to be crazy. Just about all hotel rooms sold out except a few really old places charging $900/night.

I got a room in Rawlins and will get up very early on the 21st. I figure I'll need to be self-sufficient in terms of food, water, etc. Everything in WY is going to be nuts...

What are you planning for photo/video? Solar glasses?

I'll step out of my living room on to my front deck and look up.

I apparently live in eclipse central (Lander, WY). Our hotel rooms have been booked for over a year from what I hear. My wife mentioned that the City is leasing out RV sites at the Rodeo grounds for something like $250 for three nights minimum. It'll definitely be crazy.
