Work lamps progress

Thanks to Blippie over at the camel owners club, and a random ebay fellow who kindlly opened up one of the lamps he was selling!, I got a good line on the right sort of bulb that goes in the two Bosch work lamps that serve as floods.

Jury is still out, but it looks like either the 110 is supposed to have the normal CT (2x) pencil beam, and (2x) floods, OR a few models around 1989/1990 had (4x) pencil beams, and the two extra work lamps on the corner as (2x) floods for driving.

Correct bulb: H3 12v 55w bulb, model no. (0 986 AL1 506)

Called around a few automotive stores, finally found a battery store that had ONE LEFT of an H3 type chicom knock off of the correct bulb. That's fine since I guess it isn't rocket science for a 55w

China made H3 type 55w

and guess what?!

It works!!!

Now to work on the switcheroos, they are supposed to be illuminated when on? and yet with more than one switch on, they are not illuminated. One at a time, yes. Good old Lucas electrics!

If it's anything like mine the wiring is a like my 5 year old did it. Basic concepts ignored (I had all 4 roof lights 2 pencil 2 flood wired to 1 relay that got so hot it melted my boost gauge tubing. Small enough hole to whistle for a few hours while driving ). I added a relay and now they are much brighter and the relays stay cool, weird I know .

Hmm funny you mention it. Mine is wired more or less correctly (relative) by 1990s standards, from switches in cab to 3 relays (each light pair wired to 1 relay each). Each box relay gets certainly warm but thankfully they're away from any sensitive materials. Only annoying bit is sometimes you need to wiggle a few wires to get the light pairs to work if they get bumped after a few drives.

Would be useful to compare your wiring! I wonder if it was ever re-done due to damage or..?

I'll try to update this soon, a few maintenance items done. Right now need to tinker with the diff lock linkage, not engaging fully. Roof light fuse assy is not working reliably. Otherwise bulletproof car.

Update: Door Decals

33179624316_4ca87917e2_b.jpg

Poring through stacks of old paperwork, this thing is responsible for one hell of a bill through Rovers North. Several thousand dollars in parts over the years going back to the late 90s, and all on the old carbon paper invoices and phone orders... One annoying issue was after a reskin, vehicle was fitted with incorrect green letter door decals, and not blue-letter ones as a 1990 vehicle would have. Also they were old and repros from RN, long faded and cracked. I would drive along and pick at the edges with my left hand while sitting in traffic.

Time to go...

Immediately clear why the PO had the right decals but did not put them on. It was a huge hassle to get the old ones off, they were so UV blasted they refused to come off in less than hundreds of pieces one at a time. This needed a few beers, some tunes, winch gloves, a borrowed hairdryer, and an old plastic card. Spent 3 hours carefully peeling...

The second side I had more luck with, almost got it in one go.

The correct decals came from Brenton here, who got them from the folks that make the only decent reproductions I know of, using existing cars and decals to allow for repair and restoration of the remaining CT cars in the world.

The lettering looks black but it is a wonderful blue in daylight.

And then I lost the wing vent on the highway.

Flew off somewhere in Napa County

Called Bryce at Safari Heritage, he had one. Great price too. Thank you Bryce!

Got a couple packets of the Bearmach rubber hub caps, rubber is a bit stiff and I cracked one trying to get it fitted. Threw a pinch gear oil in each cup and good to go. Had to get the taller caps as the shafts stick out a bit more than later years, Elizabeth has the short caps.

Crankcase breather pipe spongebob

The rubber hose going from crankcase to the rocker cover was very spongy, sticky with oil (seeping through?). Fortunately when your buddy Sheepdog has a spare Tdi disassembled, he permits you to steal components from time to time ;) It's a $50 part new!

Coming next:
>some boring fuel filter maintenance
>some boring trans fluid changes
>some boring Rovers North ecclectic parts order (thank you Zack)
>some boring battery system un-gerry-rigging
>I get stuck in someone's driveway and winch out (of someone's driveway)
>some boring seatbelt replacement

In no particular order.

Let’s go already!
Very nice chunk of history. Congrats.

If you have to replace your buddy's breather hose, Paddocks has Britpart for about 18GBP. ERR877.

Glad to see the CT stayed in the club. Heard about the LR3 fiasco, but sounds like u came out way ahead now! My Santana is finally being shipped. Can't wait to see the CT next to her Spanish hermana!
