u1300 om366la

Hi there, i have been reading how the om366la engine is designed for better fuel efficiency vs the older om352. (?)

and given the added power of a mildly tuned om366la -one would expect that the same u1300 "should" get some better mpg figures if able to push the same chunk down the road somewhat easier...... but what kind of mpg are u1300s expected to eek out over an om352 in the same u1300?

Fast axles? Engine work? Injection pump? Intercooler? Bigger tires? There's alot of variables to factor in. I do have the 366 and I get 10-15mpg with my U1300 ambulance depending on my right foot.

fast axles, 220hp, intercooler, 365mpt81, om366LA, light u1300/ softop

so no real mpg/ fuel efficiency improvement -more of a power enhancement with similar fuel economy as a 352???

I have fast axles, overdrive, 365/80s and get similar fuel consumption to everyone from my OM352A, mine is a bit modified, intercooler, GT2860RS turbo but we weight 8 tons and are about 600mm taller than a normal Unimog due to the camper. I drive at around 90-100kph on highways and around 80kph on good dirt roads.

This is my fuel consumption over 18,000km around Australia, highway, dirt roads and slow off road tracks.

On our last trip from Brisbane to Melbourne, we used about 310l for 1765km, with an average speed of 87kph ( we had to slow down in the towns) it was highway/tar roads all the way. That give us a fuel consumption of 17.5lt/100km or 13.5mpg. We might have been over 8 tons on this trip, we were fully loaded and carrying a lot more extra stuff as we were moving house.

Good stats Iain, thanks for sharing. How do you go about getting accurate fuel used (L) numbers? It can be hard to tell when "full" is "full" (to a consistent fuel volume) so to speak in the stock BW U1300L fuel tank that we have on our rig. Just wondering how you get accurate numbers with your setup.

I always use the same method, filling it until I can see the fuel at the bottom of the filler tube. I can just see the level when the nozzle is halfway in and it normally within 5 litres after the auto shut off clicks on the filler nozzle.

My Sat Nav has a function that allows me to put in the fuel usage each time time I fill up and I can get the figures out as a spreadsheet form. I use that all the time so any errors will balance out in the long term.

Since I wanted to record what the consumption was on a long highway only trip, when I left home we drove to the service station, filled up both tanks and when we got here, I filled them both back up again. The distance is what we travelled between the service stations.

Hello Iain,
were you in Kalgoorlie last Sunday, as there was a white mog camper in a front yard as we left Kalgoorlie early Sunday morning. We picked up our mog on Saturday and drove it home.
Regards
