Volvo C304 TGB13 6x6 "BreadBox" Poptop Van Thing

I'm usually the worst at keeping build threads going, but I'll try and keep up on this one.
I’ll also try and make it to a bunch of the PNW shindigs. I’m in Portland. But spend a bunch of time in the Olympia area. And Bend/Central Oregon.

The Volvo hunt had been on for almost a year now. I had always wanted a Mog. I quickly realized I won't be able to afford one anytime soon, and most were a bit bigger than I'd ever want to get. At least at this point in my life.

Pinzes always seem to go for oodles more money than I have. And I would have preferred the diesel variant.

Cue the C30x series. The 4x4 has always been super impressive to me. And I had even seen a couple in the flesh.
The 6x6 seemed to tick more of the boxes. Load capacity, build out space in the rear, drivability, and badassery.
The TGB20s seemed a bit long. And would need quite a bit to retrofit the troop carrier, whereas the others were very useable even in mil-spec.
Therefore, the Tgb13 was the goal. The ambulance was neat, but I love the looks of the BreadBox.

So, I began the search....
I eventually planned to import one from Sweden, but through a whole lot of internet searching/luck I found one stateside that the owner was willing to let go of. The previous owner was the nicest and we made a deal.

So, I received it two weeks ago.
I’ve been plugging away at all sorts of little things.
The rear most diff is a bit blown, so I’ve got that all torn apart. I've been looking into sourcing a new gearset/bearings and am heavily debating going to 5.99s to help me out with some top speed.
A full brake rebuild is in order, as I’ve seemed to have blown the old seals on the master.

Oh the joys of having to order all sorts of parts that aren't available here.

It needs tires, a good tune up on the old B30, flush some fluids, and should go into semi daily driver duty.
It also needs a bit of rust repair, but flat panels will be nice for welding up.

I’ve got huge plans for it. Building out the back half to be a livable situation is the idea.

I’m just finishing up my M. Arch and am working on incorporating this into my Thesis as a study of micro-living/modern covered wagon/nomadic supporting/vanlife toting/MadMax referencing “thing”.

On to the pics:

I was so excited when the PO texted me this.

Again, I have all sorts of plans for it.
Eventual swaps, pop top fittings, interior build out, etc.

Nice volvo c304. And not too much rust, what I can see. Oregon is also perfect for 6x6, not very far to very nice roads. What I just remember from a RV trip in 2011.

I look forward to following your thread :)

Great to have another Volvo around the PNW. Hope to see you and it at the NW Mogfest in Sheridan OR in August.

Thank you, Tom. I'll be following your build closely.
I plan to do an OM606 swap eventually.

I plan to make it to Mogfest this year! I still have quite a bit to address on the Volvo.

I've been ordering oodles of brake bits. The master let go on me, so that'll need a rebuild.
I figured I might as well get all the drums 100%. Then to figure out gearing.

Yeah! We follow each other on there. I'm @ossiep
I post other dorky things. Not just the Volvo.
Congrats on the Cool Ride Contest! Overland Expo looked like a blast.

When I bought the Volvo, it had been sitting in a field for quite a few years.
The bearings on the input gear of the diff had exploded at some point. So, I had to track down another matching ring and pinion.

But that got put back in. And we were in business. Sorta.

So... I did a bunch of maintenance and rebuilt a bunch of bits.
I still have plenty more to work on, but a deal popped up and I jumped on it.

I had wanted to add a pop top from the start.
I looked into Westfalia tops and Eurovan tops. I liked how slick they incorporated the bed into the top, but only being able to stand in the one portion of the pivot wasn't as ideal.

I would have loved a Sportsmobile as the bed is incorporated neatly.
Anyway, I didn't find one of those.

Instead, I found a 71' Chevy Van. It had been outfitted by CombiWagons, which was an outfit out of Ballard that did neat tops in the 70's. They're no longer around now.
It had had an engine fire and I got it for far too cheap.

This was all pretty straightforward. I removed all 400 screws holding the top to the Chevy. Separated the mega old Butyl tape. And lifted her over.

But the top is amazing. It has rigid aluminum panels with slider windows. It fit really quite good. I had to remove the gunner hatch... And cut a massive hole.

I still need to restore the fiberglass top. It's a bit sad and thin in some spots. But it stays water tight and functions great for now.

Uhhhhh, next. More maintenance was in there. Probably a brake job of some sort. Buying gas... The usual.
IMG_3590.JPG

The tires were original and rock hard. I also wanted a bit more rollout to help keep up with traffic on the freeways.
So I ordered some monster tires. And mounted them. And it was a job and a half. And barely fit the tire machine I was using.

At the same time, I decided to throw a coat of paint on it. The camo was always a bit much.... Like militant. And I'm not.
So I painted it. With a roller.

And here it is. With tires mounted. And I finally added the wood siding back on. Which I love...

I still have a bunch of rust to address at some point. As you can see below the rear door...

I covered it with some sheet metal for now. I'll use it for a patch panel at some point.

Anyway. That's mostly current.

And here's some better pics of it.

This was a bit of my end goal... I had a presentation for my thesis review two weeks ago. And the Volvo was a bit of a jump off point for this wild narrative about architecture saving the city after a disaster. Here's some other photos from the presentation. Which was neat to get over with.

Brandon Haley took these review images. I dunno if he's on here... @bhaleyimage haha.

And that's about current. I took it to a Volvo show here. Which was comical.
I've ordered some brake goodies, so I can get those sorted out. And I definitely have some things to address, but I'm stoked to get it out and about.

Looks great! I saw this Volvo breadbox in Iceland last week. Not sure what variant it is, but about as breadbox shaped as it gets!
