Hi all,
I recently bought a 1983 Toyota Huntsman camper in great shape all around, except it appears the rear axle recall was never done.
I've been researching and found a thread on here that gave me some ideas, but didn't have any conclusions in the post.
Wondering if anyone knows of a rear axle I can swap in for the '83 pickup that can also carry the load of the camper?
Could an 80 series, Tundra, T100, etc. swap in and manage the weight? Or a random axle from a chevy, etc?
I learned that a full floating, 6-lug, 1 ton rear is a must (but I'm planning on gutting the thing and reducing weight as much as possible so maybe an axle from a 3/4 ton?).
frontrangeoffroadfab.com sells a full floating 'conversion' for older Toyota pickups that I'm looking at. Any opinions?
I'm thinking it would be nice to abandon the dually, lift the entire thing a bit, clear some bigger tires and improve suspension.
MPG loss be damned.
Any insight is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
-Ben
