Work hard play hard

...and about 30 minutes after I installed it, I put it to use changing the pump on one of the trucks!

The 30 day work week is finally over and it's time to pack for a 3 week road trip! It's about time I get to the "play hard" part of this whole equation

I like the set up for the tool chest. Giving me ideas for a similar swing system for the cooking station in our truck. I also like the bed platform set up. Could you give a bit more info about that? How does the pulley system get rigged and how does it operate? How do you secure the plywood during use so it doesn't shift or swing? Seems a great way to store all the sleeping gear above the rest of the gear.

Also, about the SUV tent. How do you like the set up on those, is it easy enough for a late night pull in and quick up? Did the awning come with it, or did you add that?

The SUV tent is awesome, I average between 10 and 15 minutes from shutting off the truck, and having a fully setup camp including all the extras. But just the tent itself goes up and is attached to the truck in 5 minutes, and comes down just the same. I've had this tent for 5 years and used to use it on a trailer I had, I always put it in the very back so it's the first thing to come out. If it's bad weather or dark, you can put the tent up real quick, then finish setting up from inside the warm and dry tent. Same for packing up, you can pack up and load all your gear from inside the tent. Then once you're done, just pull the tent down real quick and throw it in the back. No need to roll it up or put it back in the bag, since you'll have to open it back up to dry anyways.

The pulley setup is nothing fancy, just one on each corner with an extra at the front left corner to send a line back to the winch. It's just a cheap boat winch from tractor supply with the handle removed. A 3/4" socket on my drill raises and lowers it, or you could just use a ratchet if the drill dies. The other end of the ropes are just tied to holes drilled in each corner of the plywood. All the bedding stays in place ready to go, so you litteraly just lower it down and hop in. It lowers all the way down and sits on the floor of the bed, so there's no need to secure it in any way. The only downside is that you have to unload the bed to use it, but it could drop down and sit on top of a Decked type setup just the same, or have storage boxes that are the same size for it to sit on

I took a few days to get across Nevada, I tried to avoid highways as much as possible and was able to cross the majority of the state on dirt. Then I drove to arches national park, but I ended up bailing on that idea once I got there and went exploring the desert on my own instead. After that I headed up into the Rockies to camp near Shrine Mountain last night. Camp was at 10,500' and it got down to 38 degrees, but there was one hell of a view on the way down!

I guess I could update this... We made it out to Denver, up through Wyoming, Yellowstone, through Montana, then booked it down to bend Oregon for a few days, and finally headed home.

Ended up being a 3500 mile trip over 16 days and we only stayed in one motel room, and two actual campgrounds, the rest was all BLM or national forest land

And it's dual purpose, but it's still mainly a work truck. It's been running pretty well non stop since I got it

Nice work on adjusting the shell to fit your truck. Looks good.

I also like how the shell comes off and you still have a functional ladder rack!

It does just fine for me. I occasionally pull around 10 to 14k pounds with it and it gets around without a problem. But I don't tow with it that often, if I need to pull something heavy I just take my other truck. I wanted quiet, smooth, cheap to maintain, and comfortable to spend long amounts of time in. I've had the Cummins 5.9 in the past, and it is none of those things.

The shell slides right off the back and sits on a stand that's just a little lower than the bed height. I can put it on or take it off by myself without a problem
