This 280GE was imported into the United States in 2013 through the 25-year exemption and is fully road legal. Purchased from well-known Dutch Gelandewagen experts at G-Zuna, this 280GE offers on-road usability with its durable, fuel-injected, twin-cam inline six cylinder engine and 4-speed automatic transmission. Trail-ready, this G also handles highway and urban environments with ease, unlike similar trucks of the period.
Metallic Black on Black Leather/Plaid cloth
Top spec gasoline engine, twin cam, 2.8L “M110” inline-six
4-speed automatic transmission, factory A/C, fold-down bench seats, etc.
Odometer showing 81,518 kilometers / 50,653 miles
Now 32 years old, the truck shows surprisingly well. It wears a black metallic exterior color with the plaid cloth on black leather and appears to have lived a good life during its stay in Europe. Believed to have been repainted at some point, its current finish shows only minimal evidence of use and some minor corrosion (typical with W460s) still in a manageable state, should one choose to correct. These areas are pictured below.
Mechanically the truck is strong and was recently checked out by a local, vintage Mercedes-Benz independent shop to ensure everything was in good order and the following areas were all they claimed would eventually require attention:
Left front axle “swivel ball” slowly leaking grease
- Slight fluid leak from back of transmission
A well-appointed W460, this 280GE is equipped with 4-speed automatic transmission, front and rear electric windows, factory air conditioning and desirable, fold-down bench seats in cargo area. The original stereo was updated with a JVC radio with AM/FM/CD changer.
These early, W460 Gelandewagens are a rare site in the United States and are always a conversation starter. As much as I like some of the niceties of the newer more W463s, it's hard to ignore the utilitarian simplicity of these original trucks. With the six-cylinder gasoline configuration the truck offers real-world usability and is a blank canvas for an overland build.
The G is available for inspection in a climate-controlled garage in Charlotte, North Carolina. $29,000. PM for more questions.
