Here are some photos from our trip to the Land of Mordor A.K.A Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. The full writeup with additional photos can be seen on my blog.
We stopped on our way to Mordor at the Malad River narrows where we found lots of broken freshwater clam shells.
Our group crossed the 7,300 year old Grassy Lava Flow on a very rough lava rock road to get to our campground for the night.
The flow is very rough and broken landscape.
Our campsite was in a grassy area surrounded by the lava.
We saw lots of wildflowers.
Lava forms interesting designs as it slowly moves and cools.
The road up to the top of the 7,550 foot tall Big Southern Butte was narrow, rough, and steep as it climbed 2,500 feet in five miles.
The view from the top was worth the drive.
We camped at Wapi campground next to the 2,200 year old Wapi Laval Flow. The fire pit is in a depression out of the wind.
The sunsets were beautiful.
