TASTEY 2017- A North Rim of the Grand Canyon... thing

Traverse the Arizona Strip Trip Expedition Year 2017... (You gotta have a catchy name, right? right.... guys.... where ya going)

We headed out from work as early as we dare without calling it a day off. We were headed to meet Kevin and his daughter near Lee’s Ferry.
I was actually glad we’d stopped to gas up here. After all the rush rush rush, it felt like we were finally at the jumping off point. Adventure ahead, literally.

The moment you hit dirt. It’s the official jumping off point. My blood pressure lowers. I’m home.

We did my usual routine. Primary dirt road to secondary to tertiary. This last one had no tracks, but the ones we laid down. It was great. Even using all three lockers and low range we were getting stuck. The sand was borderline silt and pillowey soft. Yes, airing down would/did solve it easily, but it was interesting to be stopped in our tracks on such a low incline hill! It was great! It made me all the more sure that we’d see no one while up here in the Vermillion Cliffs.

We caught the last little bit of sunset from camp.

Kevin has a great setup. He’s got the OEM Aux fuel tank completely wired as it would have been from Toyota. He’s also got a supercharger that, although it runs hot and burns a lot of fuel, was sure cool. I just can’t justify one. In under 200 miles of dirt the next day he burnt 5 more gallons of fuel than me... He’s got smaller tires/lift and no roof rack so that was saying a lot.

Still, you know you want one.

The next morning I couldn’t sleep in. Still running on HIGH from the workweek, I was up at dawn and walking around. This was a beautiful site I could explore for several hours.

So, are they jabba the huts or dinosaur poops?

From camp our road ahead looked perfect. Just the kind of thing I like to see. Plenty of animal tracks, but nothing human.

In the distance we could see the permit only area of Coyote Buttes.
This entire area was just.... different. Just different enough to feel far away. Just different enough to really love where we were at.

It hit me while looking around that I hadn’t been back here since the day I met the mapping crew with whom I’d work with for years. This was the first area I drove into with Government issued GPS tracking away, but then that was over 10 years ago.

Oh well, it was time to keep moving on. This looks like the best way to get to Fredonia on dirt!
qt6h2cc4ye4vmyi4ssyz.jpg

While driving along we passed the Arizona Trail as well. It’s a non-motorized trail running from Utah to Mexico through AZ. I’d love to mountain bike it some day. Recently a friend, an insane friend, broke the singlespeed mountain bike record for the 750 Mile ride in 8.5 days. He also has to carry his bike on his back through the Grand Canyon... just a little hiccup in the otherwise MTB friendly ride.

One of my favorite signs. It could say exhaust brakes or compression braking, but no, Fredonia uses the slang term, and I love that.

The gas station should be a country western album cover.

Yes, when I see an old truck or car I get sucked in like a magnet...

Next up we rallied over a hundred miles of fast dirt roads, transitioned to some very slow dirt roads, to some downright nasty dirt roads on a “short cut” I know down to the Bar 10. From there, we’d head to one of my favorite campsites on earth.

More on that in part 2.

We'll have some video of the trip up soon.

Toroweap? Love that place! Cleanest toilet houses I've ever seen.
I do love Toroweap, but these days there is a line of rental cars headed out there so I tend to jump over it when we're hitting points to camp on. Back when I was mapping the AZ Strip we went on a Wednesday and it was empty. One of my favorite camp spots!

AZStrip015.jpg

I really do like the sign out in front of the store. Sort of like our old bait shop. "Als' got worms".
Ha! Exacty. It's been there for a long time so I'm sure they get the idea of it. I bought one of their shirts back in 08 even.

Thanks T!

Glad I missed that! Wife and I, and like 2 other campers were the only ones out there last September. Had about the whole place to ourselves.
.
So I'm guessing a little SW, 'W. Pt'. We were going to make our way there, but didn't. Not in the park either, so you can have a fire.

See, now that sounds perfect. Next time I'm nearby on an off day, I can't wait to go back!

So, down the road we went. With each mile it was getting hotter and hotter. Hmmm, this was getting a little too similar to Phoenix temps, but no matter. I had been dreaming about jumping into the Colorado River!
Finally, we crested the last hill and saw that NO ONE was at the spot. Perfection. Well, perfection less the 110 degrees. Can't have it all.

So, after a quick half hour eating lunch and chugging some water (Gotta pregame when it's this hot), we headed down to the river. It's only a half hour hike in good weather. With my buddy Kevin not used to the heat and his 5 year old daughter it turned into a bit of a cluster.... Kelsey stepped it up and carried her a ways and we got our spray bottle of water out. (Redneck AC when we're driving our FJ40 without AC, glad we brought it!) Everyone made it down to the waters edge, if just... Then, it was time to relax. No way we were heading back up the steep hike until the sun was out of view.

Mostly on the hike we took video (I'll post as soon as we edit the video part of the trip), but I had to download this one part... Drink it in. Happy Birthday America. Apologies in advance.

We hiked up the river and floated back next to rafters who were on day 13. Pretty epic. It's something I have on my bucket list (To raft the entire canyon)

The hike back up wasn't too bad. We just hung out and took breaks as we went. Eventually, K and I knocked out the last of it and just kept an eye on Kevin and his daughter. Honestly, she did amazingly well since every step for a 5 year old was about waist height. Once back up top we were toast... We were more than toast. Food and whisky was about all I could think that sounded good.

It had cooled down a lot, but it was toasty. Every window and door was open as we slept. Somewhere around midnight a cool breeze from the river started up and made sleep bearable. At some point in the middle of the night I thought "Yah, that one point on the topos looked to be the highest elevation and I haven't been there before... sold."
So, with that I finally decided where we were headed tomorrow. A spot at MUCH higher elevation and cooler temps!

Thanks for coming along on part 2!
Tim
