electrical issue: NO OD due to interior fuse?

I have an interesting one, which simultaneously drives me mad:

I checked the door light which (should I guess) come on with open doors. I accidentally touched both contacts with my multimeter and heard the fuse blowing immediately. No big deal I thought - but after changing to a new one (not sure if all fuses have the correct value because I ran out of fuses :() ) I got only 2 Volts!

One day later I drive the truck, an 1993 E350 Quigley 7.3 IDI:
> NO OD and harsh shifts, which is probably due to the same issue. and no Odometer and speedometer.

> What has the internal van circuit to do with the E4OD controlling?
> Why is the circuit not broken but still running 2 Volts? What reduces the missing power? A ground cable cannot be broken suddenly and due to a blown fuse.
> The OD issue has happend before, in early 2014. Since then the truck has been in garages until 5 weeks now! I have NO idea what the (very bad mechanics) did to the car. Engine and tranny have been out in the last years and come back in last/ this year.

There is a power distribution box below the brake booster. From my guess THIS should control the power to the E4OD. Extremely hard to get to, just 2" to lift the cover.

Please I need to fix this ONCE and for ALL time.

It has been an Ambulance so there has been something going on early 90ies when this thing was "born".

I had a somewhat similair issue a while ago. Was replacing the injector o-rings and got everything back togeather and had an OD light flashing. Turns out I had forgotten to plug a connector back in on top of the motor. The reason I am saying this (because our rigs are different) is because when I started testing wires from the PCM to the transmission I had 2-3 volts on the wires that I had codes for. Turns out the wire splits somewhere and is a dual feed and was ghosting power back through it.

I would go back and check that fuse again. Unplug it and use a volt meter to test both sides for power. Its possible the replacement fuse is no good and the power level you are seeing is some sort of back feed.

The next step would be to find some wiring diagrams and try to understand the system a little better.

I did some research on this and actually I had a similar problem 2 years before [+ before real trouble started with unskilled mechanics]. Tranny support of juice is NOT well thought out from Ford as it seams > too many relations

So called "TECA" is powered by a relay in the power distribution box (PDB)under hood - if I am correct. Need to check which is really hard because there is just 1 inch to lift the cover of it!

Second I found this one: http://www.thedieselstop.com/forums/f30/crazy-tranny-problems-238654/index2.html#post2021817 In summary 2 similar trucks with < 1994 IDI and E4OD. E4OD just controlled by itself w/ any engine relation (besides Throttle Position). Both with Tranny trouble. Finally it´s has been a fuse NOT in the PDB but in the under Dash Fuse block.

I´ll double check. I´ve ordered a bunch of fuses. Though the tranny did NOT gave a OD constant light with the top fuses burned (truck just coming out of an garage with 3 blown fuses!).

Mine only flashed the OD light when the plug was not pushed in all the way. Start with the fuses and maybe find a better garage if no luck with that.

I'd start cleaning ground connections... may not help, but it often is the source of weird electrical trouble in unrelated systems.

Look at the rear speed sensor. And, the tach sensor. Either will keep OD off and allow shifts to be at max RPM.

I have a non stop rainy August here, therefore not much done to the truck:
Today I exchanged ALL fuses to new and correct value ones in the under Dash Fuse-Box. Non of them looked broken.

Started the truck and ... ta da :wings: Speedo showing up. Though showed "ERROR" blinking with the track counter in exchange. E4OD obviously running well, No OD blinking and normal shifting. 500 meter/ yards around the block. Shut it off 5 min. Then again the same issue as before. Which I kind of expected - because I know my truck. I have not checked yet if there is a blown one. I don´t think so.
While the 5 min the speedo was "working" I also ckecked out that I have [again] 12/13.5v on the radio ignition +! Interesting. I do not have ground on the cable that used to have ground for the radio [I think coming from the factory harness].

Issue therefore not inside the truck/ at least not inside the fuse box/fuses.

I Think I will first follow the ground hint. I´ve read that there is coming a cable to ground/negative from TECA to right side bat [???]. There is1 or 2 ground cables coming to the bat, that doesn´t too solid....

PS: I paid 1.000€ for a German Ford "specialist" to fix electronics around the tranny issues. First he wanted to charge 2.300€! So if anybody want´s to have a connection to the worst ever known Ford mechanic idiot on earth - let me know. Though in Germany of course.

I reconnected some wires, 2 times ground, that at least fixed the ground and 12v permanent.

I checked the Power Distribution Box:

Alright. After the Bosch Service guy told me that these 5 PIN relays are not available in Germany I researched myself and found out that Ford uses these also in global Ford Mondeo and Fokus etc.

Exchanged it.
> again ~12,5 volts when running on interior power, like radio ignition +

So that's hit.

Though no Speedo showing up when engine is running. This probably means also no power to TECA > no OD and tranny control.

I couldn't really test it with driving, as I will “loose“ my parking spot and will have to park hundreds of metres around the block....
Will test drive tomorrow...

Will check codes on the dash via jumper cable....

For anybody with similar problems - here´s how it has been solved. Keep in mind I am a professional car dummy that can read and evaluate - nothing more!
- as far as I know the Ford E4OD needs info from 4 sensors to work correctly: Vehicle Speed sensor, Manual Lever Position Sensor, engine RPM and throttle position. They need to work and their into goes into an ECU.
- IF there is no issue, it´s possible that the tranny still will not work correctly. Like mine did. It obviously needs power. There is a "Power distribution Box" in the engine bay with a relay that will provide power. Check if it´s burned.
- The speedo false was a different issue and only due to a 15A fuse in the fuse panel below the dashboard. If this doesn´t work the Overdrive (OD) will not work and also torque converter. This will be pretty easy noticeable by very hard shifts. It takes some hundred yards to get the OD light blinking. Though the hard shifts will come on directly.

So the combination of both solved my tranny issue this time.

If anyone does know the correct way to delete codes from the ECU like the "error 3" note in the speedo - let me know please. And it´s NOT disconnecting the battaries for any sort of time.
