thought about adding side boxes on the flatbed and fit the camper between....but i am liking the idea of closing in the sides a little better.

Check out sherptek.com I'm guessing you already have a flatbed but they have some cool accessories and ideas for flatbed/camper space

What kind of camper do you have? Is it wood, aluminum or fibreglass? This will make a difference in how you go about it. What do you want to store in the boxes? Generator and 20 gallons of fuel, or extra pillows? This also has a huge bearing on how/what will work. The camper won't have been designed to carry ANY weight in that area, so unless you just do aluminum boxes and empty them when the camper isn't on the truck, I think you're asking for problems. If it were me, I'd do some aluminum boxes mounted to the deck, but easily removable. Unless you are storing only really light stuff, you're going to need to empty the boxes every time you unload the camper from the truck.

That makes sense. So the load would be on the deck, not actually supported by the camper. I still think independent boxes would be a better idea, if not for anything else than dust proofing and not having gear beat the tar out of the sides of the camper. They could just have posts that drop in the stake box holes.

I have boxes and some open space behind them. I really like having an outside space for propane, fuel, firewood, trash, etc.. In one box I have a battery, Puma Air, small inverter, and all my chargers. The other box has a water pump, propane water heater, basically a water closet when camping. I'm thinking a lot of that stuff could be mounted in boxes under the bed to free up more space. The boxes open into nice sturdy tables and lock up nice and tight as well. They also make for a good place to stash valuables when away from camp.

I pull the stake sides to use as tables but have heard of people using longer ones for traction, which would be a cool duel use.

The camper was intended to be a slide in when fabricated. Things change. Boxes were fabricated to fill the voids. I now have ton's of storage and nice work / set up tables.

Not that custom fit (as I originally planned), but not those custom prices. Front gaps are bigger than rear.

If I was to do it again, I'd likely do the same (std boxes). I can carry extra stuff in the gaps at the ends (DEF, fuel for toys and fuel for the Honda genny, etc). Basically stuff I don't want inside. Locked camper tie downs prevent people from running off with the fuel dump cans (well, someone could, but it would be a hassle and they'd probably get covered in fuel in the process). Would also allow for some extra batts in the spaces if need be (I managed four batts on board with my mods. Had I not had that luxury, then I would have carried batts on the deck and plugged into the camper with Anderson quick connectors). Something to consider, perhaps. Only downside that I've seen is it won't be long and The Boy's skis won't fit in the upper boxes if he keeps growing like he has been. I anticipated that, but it still didn't sway me at the time (nor would it now -I could fashion a mount on the roof if I don't want to carry skis in the shower I suppose)
