Taxa Wooly Bear

Finally got some time to see how this tongue box might work on my WoollyBear trailer from Taxa Outdoors. Had to move the tongue jack forward about 1/2” which is the most I can move it. The actual receiver hitch is unfortunately welded on (for now). Anyways, the box fits very nicely. The width is perfect. The lid opens nicely.
Now I have three things to work out:
1. How to mount it so that it is stable and rugged. There is no triangle tongue.
2. The jack handle can’t rotate to raise and lower.........that’s an issue! So I need to figure out the jack. I was thinking of changing it to one with a wider wheel that moves on soft ground without sinking so much. Now I may need to look at all of it.
3. Battery fits inside with lots of room. I picked up an inverted as well. So I need to start to plan my electrical system. I want USB and cig plug style outlets in the rtt. As well as solar charging system.

So, next weekend I’ve got lots to work on!

A little organizing of the Woolly Bear galley to fit in the new Coleman stove. Going to start looking for some different containers to put things in. Spring is almost here! Excited to get ready for a camping trip soon!

Took my awning rack to be powder coated this week. Just picked it up. Looks awesome. Almost a perfect match to the rack/platform on the Woolly Bear. Mounted it back onto the trailer and then added our Guinness bottle opener we picked up in Ireland last fall.

@OutBound Overland and @bueller44, did either of you compare the Woolly Bear to the Tiger Moth when making your purchase decision? These are two models I am interested in but the closest dealer with either is 6 hours away, every dealer seems to only have the Cricket up here... If you did compare the two what was the deciding factor on the Woolly Bear? Neat trailer for sure, I like how different they are.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,
My wife was dead set against sleeping in a "coffin" (her words to describe anything teardrop like). I like the look of the TigerMoth, especially with a RTT on it. One big deciding factor for us was the size. The Woolly Bear is small and fits perfectly down one wall in the garage leaving lots of room for the vehicle to fit as well as our wall of bikes on the other side. We were leaning towards the Kakadu with it's Oztrail Tent, but it is really wide. We are extremely happy with the Woolly Bear after one year and will be using it a lot starting in May. I don't think I would do any major offloading (rock climbing with it) stock, but we have done the forestry roads with no issues. One day we will put bigger tires on it as it would be nice to match the jeep. But not a priority. We have the kids 50% of the time - so it is perfect for the two of us (my wife and I) and when all 5 of us go, we have a ground tent for the kids. I suggested maybe we need to get a massive RTT with annex nut the wife would rather the kids have their own tent! Works for me! LOL

Congrats . I bought a Tiger Moth from Warren this past Jan. He is very knowledgeable about the trailers and modifying them. . I looked at the Wooly Bear but needed a hard sided trailer. In looking at the WB the modifications I would have to do include a longer tongue with a receiver hitch so you can run a lunette ring with a pintle . Second the rear receiver hitch is only rated for carrying a bicycle rack so that would need some welding and bracing to make it into a recovery point.

Finally found some time to work on the trailer tongue. Cut off the welded on coupler and then added a 24” two inch receiver and bolted on. I’d like to weld it on, but don’t have the tools. May look into it. Trailer is only 800lbs loaded up, maybe 900 max, so I’m pretty sure it’ll be ok. Then added the max coupler. Now I’ve got room to add on the tongue box for electrical. That’s the next Saturday project after stripping down the mods to my JKU. My new JLU Rubicon will be here in a week!!!

Was able to spend some time on the trailer this last week.
Mounted the tongue box to the trailer. My daughter (she loves working with me) and I then installed the battery, a blue sea fuse box, master power on/off, a Genius 10 amp batter charger with plug mounted on the outside of the box. And a 2000w inverter. That will have to do for the upcoming May long weekend.

I have a switch panel that will be installed next and then I’ll be running LED lights in a variety of locations. Solar is coming too. Probably all over kill, but I like tinkering!

We also ordered a new SunDogX RTT from Wild Coast Tents in eastern Canada. Same sleeping area as our Tepui, but it has the over hang area over the ladder and comes with the annex. This will be where the kids sleep when we all go out. Plus, a place to put a little buddy heater too.

Selling the Tepui Kukenam.

Here’s some pics of the tongue box.

Ok, installed the Wild Coast Tent onto the WoollyBear trailer. First impressions of the tent are that it is a very high quality tent. The fabric is very thick. It came with two flys, one with windows the other without. The annex is great for extra room, my tent is just mounted a little low so the annex gathers at the bottom. Easy to put together. Has the checker plate bottom like a ruggedized tepui.
Mattress is just over 3” think and seems a little softer than the 2” that was in my tepui. Maybe I won’t need the topper?
Zippers seem to be very heavy duty.
There are 4 bungies that you hook from side to side inside before packing up to help keep the fabric in when folding. Nice feature!

I had some questions today, Saturday while setting up and emailed peter at Wild Coast and he answered me right away.

I will make more comments once we use it.
Couple of driveway shots before I pack it up

Looking good, bueller! I'm thinking of picking up a Woolly Bear at some point, so I'm following your adventures closely. Cheers!

We recently purchased at Wooly Bear trailer from Road Trip Camping in Virginia, we love it. Most importantly the wife loves it even more than I do!

Below is a link to our walk around video from Expo East 2017.

We will be modifying the trailer over the winter and will continue to post updates.

My wife and I were looking into these also. We looked into all the Taxa models and walked away with the Cricket a month ago. We too purchase from Road Trip camping in Va.

Love the rig set up so far...any places you prefer to camp? We’re new to VA and have been researching on best places to get off the grid.
