Groot the Explorer T100

Time to add another T100 to the boards. I have never had such a rare truck. As a long time Toyota truck guy I always stuck with the staples, Tacoma, 4Runner and LC. But the simplicity of these and the right combination, for us, of power, size and price made this decision.

This hopefully will take us from the NE States down to Baja MX.

So here is the start.

Here is the start.
Fresh (Maaco) paint job. New tires on tacoma rims. All new fluids, brakes, radiator, belts, and other stuff just to baseline it. Oh and a new clutch and master clutch cylinder.

Of course right away found an issue with the dreaded cracked firewall around the clutch master cylinder. Seems to be fairly common.

So my solution, for now is I pulled the assembly off and added some fender washers on either side of the holes. This gives a much better spread on the load. Very little movement now. But I will need to keep an eye on it. Until I can find a friend who can weld...

Oh so this did create a new problem where the washers changed the distance of the master cylinder rod throw distance and with a new very grippy clutch I just added a threaded bolt extension on it. Seems to work well now. I'll get a pic when it's daylight for those who also need to do this.

So truck was very dirty and dusty inside including dust in the gauge cluster. My OCD couldn't handle this...

So I pulled the dash apart and cleaned it all out.

Also pulled the gauge cluster and cleaned it. Upon pulling it out I found a crack that was hidden really by the bezel. So after cleaning it I just added a little packing tape to the corner to seal it up and help prevent it from getting bad again. Someday I would love to get to a pick and pull and replace the clear plastic.

Sorry I keep forgetting to either get a before picture or an after picture... I'll work on it.

I have a '95 here with me overseas. I love it, and it has given me no issues. I have the even more rare single cab long bed with the 5VZ, which as I understand it was only made in '95. You'll find that it is extremely powerful for its size, and easy to work on. I would recommend replacing the ADD hubs with the Aisin hubs from an older truck. It's easy and the gaskets and some parts are still available from Toyota. The 1st Gen Tacoma Safari Snorkel fits, and Cruiser Outfitters sells it with a template made specifically for the T100. Good luck with the new truck and have fun!

Great info on the snorkel! So I hate to lose the easy way of switching between 4wd and 2wd that's my hesitation on swapping the front hubs.

Any suggestions on a rear locker? Not having even a limited slip seems like a major oversight in the original design.

So I pulled the interior all apart....
New stereo and added sound deadening material all over.

If you want to still be able to easily shift into 4wd you can simply leave the hubs locked and it will act as it does now. But when planning on no need for 4wd you can unlock and save wear and tear on the CV's and gain a little MPG.

Ah ok! So basically the vacuum system would stay intact.

You got bucket seats in that bad boy? If so, then you are among the elite. I traded my bench for buckets and it was the best upgrade I ever did.

Seconding you on the hub swap, really no reason to switch to manual locking hubs. Sure is nice to be able to go into 4WD on the fly.

I have put about 40k on my T100 since we got it and have had almost no issues. Currently on a 2 year trek around North America and she is more reliable than any vehicle I have ever had.

Negative on the front buckets. I'm looking for them. I NEED them.

Yeah not sold on the hub swap.

New shift boot leather. Painted plastic trim around it. Added the best part ever from a Land Rover Disco. The cup holder.
