no idea where to ask this.. gluing velcro to plastic / headliner

so my first design for my velcro up window screens / privacy shades didn't work, all the glued pieces pretty much became detached. going to pull whats still clinging and try again. anyways what glue should I use? because of their location the velcro is "fuzzy side up" going to rough up the surfaces they glue to more, but I can't do that to the headliner ones, anyone had any success attaching this stuff if so what glue did you use?

plastic, metal and headliner, pretty much velcro around the insides of the windows. kinda hard to explain.. Looking into the self adhesive stuff but its pricey.. I need like 75' whole point is so that they seal and keep the bugs out with the windows rolled down...

Contact cement.

Apply to both sides. Wait until it's dry. Press the two sides together. Permanent bond.

Hot glue might work. And a hot glue gun is super handy to have around anyway.

Even high-temp hot glue can get soft at the temperatures that can happen inside a vehicle parked in the sun. Ask the legions of coplayers (costumed fans) at Comic Con, etc. who've had their armor come apart in the car...

I used to work in rubber R&D. We occasionally had to adhesive bond various polymers (rubber or plastic) to build mock-ups, etc.

We used Loctite 380 Black Max adhesive. It is a rubber modified cyanoacrylate (super glue). Super glue is brittle. The rubber in Black Max gives it a little flexibility.

The cyanoacrylate adhesives have some chemistry going on with what it is applied to so it does not work with all types of plastic and rubber. Only way to know is to test it.

I sell Henkel products (loctite) but $40 for a 1oz bottle?! is fastenal sniffing it? that's insane, I can possibly get this stuff through my job, I need a lot (glue down about 70' of velcro) so that stuff just isn't going to fit my budget, I did buy a ton of contact cement thinking that might do the trick, but haven't got to anything yet as I wanted to get an answer from folks who have actually done it.. will contact cement work gluing to the headliner?

I did something similar, getting velcro to stick to the headliner was easy - pretty much any old super glue will do. Getting it to stick to the slick nineties interior plastic is something I still haven't figured out.

Do you have a pic of what you are trying to do. When you say plastic headliner is it a re-moveable panel? If velcro to plastic I would recommend Industrial strength Velcro, if glue I would use Landau(what they used to glue fake vinyl covertible tops to metal)Glue. I use to for upholstery in all applications. It gets stronger as it dries and heats.

You get what you pay for.

A specialist adhesive for each different surface is likely needed.

Or consider proper fasteners like SailRite sells, maybe even PlusNuts.

You may jury-rig something lasts for a while, but for doing it properly $40 is nothing.

Strong magnets?
