Remove manual tranny control level cover / boot thingy

On a 91 Montero, manual, how do I remove the rubber boot below the shifters? Not the "shift lever boot" but the one below that? I'm afraid I'll tear it if I give it a good yank over the shifters. And I can't figure out how to get the chrome part of the shifter off.
