Sweet!, just booked my one-way plane ticket to Palm Springs, CA. It's a 100% California car, a couple of owners, but lots of maintenance records and periodic intervals reported by all owners at either Mitsubishi or Valvoline. Timing belt service was done at 174k or so and it has 189k on it now, so this should be a solid enough foundation to build. They've agreed to take it to get it's oil changed, fluids topped off, tires rotated, and he said he would change the diff fluids as well before meeting me at the airport next Saturday.

Anything I should look for when I inspect it, apart from the obvious? I was told to make sure the CEL, ABS, and other lights run their cycle upon start-up and when I ask the owner she sent me a video of the start-up display cycle and everything was nominal.

Nice looking rig.

With 189k on her the valve stem seals are soon to be an issue, unless already done; mine kicked in at 190k after looking good for the first 5k with no smoke and several trips to the beach(es). I'd look at the front suspension/bushings for any obvious tears or leaks as the play on these trucks can be alarming on a longer trip if you're not used to it, also play around with the locker and 4wd both from a stop and in motion, mine got 'sticky' after sitting and not being used for a while.

Other than that, and basic maintenance being done on her by the owners, just enjoy taking her back home. I'd keep an eye an oil levels every time you fuel up, too.

Oh the memories.:smilies27....it was just a year ago I began my search for the "right" Gen 2.5. My main goal was finding a stock well taken care of Gen 2.5 "Winter Package"...I didn't really care about the miles since realistically finding a low mileage Gen 2.5 was a longshot. All that mattered was it was well taken care of and in good condition...which I could work with as a great starting point for MY build. It was hard...I almost settled with far worse condition ones and trust me there was a good amount of them, but I eventually had some luck and found one which happened to be across the country in the PNW.

Mine was well taken care of...really didn't have to do much maintenance after tearing it done since the previous owner did them somewhat recently but I did it because of peace of mind and knowing I used OEM parts. It was still a fair amount of work to get it to where I wanted it to be and there was some wear and tear after being used for 20 years but nothing that was not hard to replace.

Here is my build thread for reference.

MrGalantguy, you and I had the same idea around the same time in naming our builds "Groot." Mine was my Jeep I built last year (link min my signature.) I really like your thread and will stay tuned! Saturday is creeping closer and closer and I can't wait to land and see the Monty for the first time.

Once i get it in my hand and home safe to TX, I'll have some questions (like where did you get your JDM turn signals!?)

Cheers!

After a 1,300 mile drive, I got it home to Austin. I popped a tire in the desert between Indio and Blythe, CA. Then 15 miles later, both inner CV boots failed. Here's some quick pictures from the weekend.

Man, you stopped in Mesa but didn't visit! :) Good to see you made home, if you're ever back in Az lets hit some trails.

Hey Toasty! I did stop in Mesa to meet with Brenden (@99montstero). We re-routed the battery cable away from the EGR and then installed a set of manual locking hubs. He gave me a run-down on how to operate the Montero's tarnsfer case and locker and then we compared crawl ratios. It was a lot of fun.

I'll be back in AZ for Overland Expo West in May, the northern half of the AZ BDR, and a couple days on either the CO or UT BDR's.
