Why so few GM Builds?

An axle is only as strong as the application. Any idiot with a heavy right foot can break any axle. Google 'broken Dana 60' and you will get quite a few results. While a bigger axle works great for internet d*** measuring, there are vehicles of all sorts with "undesirable" axles doing just fine. My old rig was a V8 ZJ with a rear Dana 35C which is by no means a strong axle but with smart driving and knowing the vehicle and its limits it never gave me any trouble.

I'd rather just have a Detroit locker friendly front axle that'll hold up to mild off road use and the weight of the big trucks.

If ya'll know a better, readily available, set of axles, then I'm all ears. Might build a YJ with fullsize axles, or buy a KTM.

That's great but what does axle choice for a purpose built offroad rig have to do with a thread about GM's for expedition/overland travel?

It's just a matter of koolaid drinkers need to spew their hatred of anything they don't like, not so much a matter that it's IFS to whine about it's more of a way to bash the other brand! simple matter of tiny peepee syndrome!

Easy, there is no better full size front axle for ex/ol travel. Anyone offering a Ford SD SAS for the 2019 GM's yet? LOL.

It's ok, you can get a 60 for less than the cost of nice GM tie rods.

These threads are dumb.

I've owned about a dozen IFS GMs including my Current 98 1/2 ton and 07 1 ton. I've put them a lot of places I shouldn't. I've broken a few parts.

the paradox is the original question was why not more GM builds... one of the biggest reasons - the derailing of this thread. Why post what I'm doing when I'm going to get Pirate-esque hate? if I'm going to take my time, energy and money to blog about what I'm doing; I'll be damned before I do it somewhere where I'm going to have to defend myself against trolls. This isn't an IFS v. solid axle thread. This is about why no one posts.... trolls. In this case a Toyotroll, but they come in all flavors.

I have had several Suburbans through the years. I wouldn't drive anything else. My suburban at the moment is a 2001 k2500 8.1L 4l80e and G80 locker. Sleeping in it on a rainy trail is great.

They are not sexy. They are reliable as hell as long as you don't go out of your way to trash it, and parts are so cheap that you can find them scattered on any trail a short walk from where you broke down. You can go on craigslist and get a decent OBS or NBS suburban or Tahoe for under $2k and drive it anywhere in North America with absolutely no issues. And that is exactly what most GM owners are doing, driving their rigs to the farthest reaches of North America without even knowing that there are forums like this. More exotic (read: impractical or expensive) rigs like Toyotas, Nissans and Land Rover owners have that time to blog about their dream adventures while the truck is in the shop.

The simple answer to the thread is that there are better options out there from Ford and Dodge since the early 1990. Ya'll are the ones getting but hurt about it, frack off. I simply went out and bought a better truck. And when I had the choice to drop my broken GM for my service vehicle, I jumped on it.

If you like flimsy trucks, then like flimsy trucks. There's no shame in it.

A front axle that isn't locker friendly is useless to me and many others. If I can avoid $900 aftermarket tierods, I'd like to.
