Hub Rings / New Wheels

I have never experienced issues with lug centric setups. Even if you needed the hub ring to center the wheel, if the lugs didn't bolt the wheel up on center, it would force the wheel to smash the hub ring sideways. If you really want hub rings, get metal ones.

I always thought the hub ring just helped to center the wheel prior to bolting it down - so being plastic was ok? Also would show if there was any issues if it was squished such as loose lug nuts.

I used hub centric rings that were plastic on a daily driver/autocross Mitsubishi Evolution.
They did exactly what you want.
Lots on on/offs with these wheels too, they held up fine.

I'd go with plastic rings, as they're less likely to end up permanently stuck to the hub or wheel if you ever have a need to remove them. And yeah, they're mostly there to ensure the wheel is centered on the hub before tightening the lugs.
