Gumuz Body and Paint, NW Ethiopia

Just back from 6 weeks of archaeological field work in NW Ethiopia in the lowlands along the border with Sudan. The local tribe, the Gumuz, still hunt with bow and arrow, use snares for small mammals and birds, etc. I hire a bunch of their young folks to work in our tented camp with the fossils. The bush is hard on our rigs, and so on the last days of the season I have the kids sand down and (brush) paint the Toyota. They really enjoy the work and end up with as much paint on them as on the rig. But the final product looks good, at least until we complete the 2-12 hr/day drive back to Addis Ababa. We collected a spectacularly large fossil lion this year, a partial mandible, that dwarfs modern lions. Glad I didn't live in the region 75,000 years ago! If you happen to be out my direction next winter, on your way, say, overlanding from Addis Ababa to Khartoum, you should stop by for a cup of bunna (coffee)!Gumuz Duramba body and paint.jpgOld Blue new.jpg
