I might be barking up the wrong tree here, but some of the best budget vehicle ideas I've found came from this community, so I figured it was worth a shot.
Looking for a running and somewhat mechanically sound 4x4 SUV. Main use of the rig will be camping trips and some light off roading, so it doesn't have to be a show car, I have 3 boys and a dog that will be jumping all over it. I understand the philosophy of paying up now instead of paying for repairs later, but as a full time single Dad I'm gonna need to stay in the $3k range. Just need a good base to start with.

Jeep Cherokee XJ
1st or 2nd Gen Toyota 4runner
Nissan Pathfinder 1st or 2nd Gen
Isuzu Trooper
Mitsubishi Montero
LR Discovery 1 (Probably shouldn't be on this list, but I'm a sucker for them)
If you know of anything else that fits the bill, feel free to add. I don't have any specific brand loyalty.
I'm located about 30 miles south of Louisville, KY and I'm not afraid to travel a bit for the right truck.
