Trip Ideas Needed Michigan to Texas for a 9 day trip.

Hey folks,

Looking for some ideas, maybe a pre-mapped trail. We have 9 days in June where we would like to do a trip leaving the Detroit, Michigan area, ending up somewhere near San Antonio, Texas. We are really flexible as to where we go, and what to run. We would prefer staying mostly on dirt and trails, with as much scenic/ghost towns/exploration areas as possible. We will be driving our tow rig, which is a lightly modded Ford Excursion 7.3 diesel. We will have about 5 kids with us, and would like a mix of camping and hotels. 9 days is our max.

So, any ideas? Anything is appreciated!

That's kind of a rough round schedule trip for only 9 days....lots of time behind the wheel!

But some ideas......Springfield Missouri, the original, first Bass Pro store used to have really big aquariums full of fresh water game fish...kinda cool for the kids to see.

SW Arkansas has a fun camping state park where you can all dig in the dirt and then pan it looking for diamonds (some pretty big ones have been found there).

Of course Arkansas has the Ozarks with “quaint” touristy stores and “penny” candies with rural crafts in many places.

The whole route could be planned around lake area campgrounds so swimming and canoeing, fishing etc. could be daily activities. You're going through a good part of the Texas Hill Country and most state parks there are along rivers, streams with swimming holes, and lakes.

Look for small, local rodeos along the route....they are cheap and a blast to attend (usually there are no big bleachers keeping you away from the action....you often can lean right on the fence at the arena and watch the action from there).

Thanks! We might be bumping it up to two weeks. Unfortunately that's about all I can get. Looking for as much dirt road, ghost towns, etc. as possible.
