first and foremost, 68-72 chevy trucks are, and will always be my favorite truck ever. then, couple the fact that i am moving more and more to the idea that a "camper" is a nice idea! now, i will say that this is huge! but, there is one 4 blocks from me, and i all but stop to look at it every time i drive by it. im not particularly in love with the length behind the rear wheels, but, space is nice.

so if i owned one? hmm......lets see. to start, 12v CTD, zf6spd, 272 tcase. then, lets throw some superduty 4" leafs on the front over a rockwell 2.5 with some street worthy mods. make the rear match with some custom springs over a rockwell 2.5, and switch it up to some super singles. think that a 46 michelin would fit the bill. some tasteful fender treatment would allow the tires to fit.

the reason you ask? i like to get "over there", to see whats there. i think this would be a super stout setup, with fair fuel mileage. with a hopped up 12v, i could pull my sami crawler and a couple atv's too! let the disappearance begin!

any thoughts? all opinions should include that regardless of opinion, it would be turned 4x4!

In Memory of Bud Mitchell, a little synopsis of the history of the Mitchell & Sons Camper Company:

I would like to clear up the history of the Mitchell camper company for those who are interested. The name of the company was Mitchell and Sons because the Mitchell brother’s father started the company. Harry Mitchell Sr. started by building a small camper for himself, and other people wanted Harry to build one for them. The operation grew and in 1961 the company moved from Henderson CO to a larger facility on 64th Ave in Commerce City in 1961.

The sons came to manage the business. Mick (Harry B.) was the CEO and Bud (Charles R.) ran the marketing/ sales. Mitchell and Sons, Inc. built excellent campers and the firm was the largest in the area. They sold factory direct to the customer. The built Truck campers and eventually chassis-mount motor homes, 5th wheels and a small trailer with slide out beds. It may have been the first with slides.

The company survived the oil embargo of 1973. Buy 1976 they had sales outlets in Albuquerque, Pueblo, Grand Junction, Colorado Springs, and Commerce City. They were the largest RV manufacturer in the US to sell factory direct to the customer. Things were looking good for the business, but disaster struck on March 15th, 1976 when fire broke out at the factory. The damage was severe.
They were able to continue on a more limited basis for a while.

Shortly after the fire, the 1978 oil problems brought huge fuel costs and the market went down hill. They left the RV business about 1980. The end was very sad for me because I had owned two of their campers and had been a personal friend of the Mitchell families.

Much like the Mitchell Company, the Northstar company of Cedar Falls, IA is a long time family operation run by folks who use their product and build quali

You don't need to worry about rear overhang if you're going to run it on 46" tires. Low branches (and bridges) would be a bigger concern.

Actually, a mild lift during the 4x4 conversion, combined with a slight angle cut to the back during the rebuild could make a very nice camper. Think old school version of an Earthroamer.

bat. please explain.

i understand where most wont care for it. but, its nostalgic, built like a tank, and super cool.

sure it cant "wheel", but it will get back into places the typical motorhome will not! and built my way, it would be super capable.

I'm planning on a 4x4 conversion w with a D60 and np205. Stock 4x4 height, just to deal with mud and snow in the areas we camp. Gonna flat tow the xj behind it. All this will be after I repair the leaky roof.

I'm picking it up next week. May be awhile till I get the conversion done since I have to fix the roof first. I will post up the process though.
