1979 J10 I found for sale.

I just found a 1979 J10 pickup for sale. Looks to be in pretty good shape, but it is hard to know for sure because it has been completly bedlinered.

It is one of my short list to look out for project trucks. First on the list would be an FC of either variety, second would be a Commanche with a 4.0 and 4WD, and this would be third andsince this one is a inline six (258) and a 4 speed, it is just about equal to a Commanche on my list.

My dilema is, I won't drive a bedlinered flat black truck around. Maybe when I was 20, but it is not my style now. I figured whatever I bought I would paint silver to match my JK and my trailers. Sort of a theme, all silver and black in the garage/hangar/and driveway as far as the work and utility type rigs go.

Anyone even paint over bedliner? Is it sandable? It seems hard enough. I live in an agriculture area and there are a few painters who have lots of cousins to get stuff done cheap and fast if you know what I am saying.

I had to remove black bedliner off my entire truck before painting it, it sucked. The only good thing is that it wasn't really a great bedliner job or a thick coat, but it was still a royal pain in my rear. A knotted stainless wire brush on a 4" grinder seemed to work best for me. You basically had to have something coarse enough it wouldn't heat up the liner and make it all gooey.

Unless its a screaming deal or you can live with the bedliner I would pass.

I just hit an old tool box I did with bed liner about 10 years ago with my DA sander and a 60 grit disc. It clogged up pretty quick and made a mess of the spot I hit.
Too bad someone decided to ruin a nice old truck. I am going to have to pass. I understand the appeal of a bed liner finish on a rock crawler, but this is a pretty ghetto example of it, and I want a classic truck to haul goats and lumber in.
I anyone is looking for a 6 cylinder J10 in NC Washington, let me know. I pass the number along.

Yeah, a little bed liner can hide a multitude of sins. Unless it's sitting on Dana 60s, a pass is the right choice. Great wish list, though! Keep looking. These things show up from time to time at reasonable prices. I suspect that might be the case this summer as people begin to have second thoughts about keeping an older truck as a second or third vehicle when gas hits $4.00/gallon.

Funny, one of many reasons I want an old truck is for when gas gets real expensive, or becomes rationed.
It is very easy to convert old trucks to diesel as there is no electronics and tons of room. Old gas engines will also run on any crap combination of alchol you can brew up. They may now make a lot of power, but they will run. Old inline 6 engines will probably still make some torque on alchol too. I live where there is 1000's of tons of apples grow.
I was told back in the 1930's and 40's it was common for farmers to have stills to make fuel from the rotten stuff.
Not that this is my short term plan for an old truck, but I am always on the lookout for the stuff to make it happen.
