After getting my first-year of production, turbo-diesel G-wagen ready for its initial longer-term trip (This is my 3rd one, after a long stretch of Pinzgauer and then Volvo C303 ownership) I finally got a start out of Vegas in the 12th after staying in town a few days. I went straight to Az to a rarely visited part of the Grand Canyon via a 50 mile off-road/dirt road to Toroweap which is an overlook with a 3000ft. drop straight down. From there I went up to Ut. toward Needles, where we stayed overnight after a late-day/night run of Elephant Hill which is not recommended to run at night! The factory lockers and Hella driving lights were nice to have for this task. After a stay at the reserved camp site, we set off for Moab and the Grand Gultch for two weeks then came back to Ca. via Hanksville and then Fruita, where you can have the best fruit pie that I know of!
The footprint pic is from a dinosaur. You can also see the bed I built into this 2-door G. It has a section that folds forward after the seats are set forward. I installed a Dometic 18 fridge back there too, which stayed on for two weeks straight with no issue. I miss the room of my Volvo C303 but it was also nice to be back into a conventional 4x4 for various reasons. I only high-centered my rear axle on a rock once since I am used to having 16" under the Volvo's portal axles.
