I have loved and cared for this old Vanagon for 3 years. Spent a ton of funds on it and have had some AWESOME adventures. However, now I have an Xterra build going and a pull behind camper. So, the old Vanagon just isnt going to see the action it deserves anymore.
Manual trans with the aircooled 2.0liter 4cyl.
Here is a video walk around and drive.
I have thousands of dollars in receipts and documentation on the Vanagon leading back to 1997.
Recent major mechanical repairs include...
Engine rebuild (Pistons, heads, rings, main rod and bearings, camshaft, valves, jugs, lifters, etc.)-2021
Flywheel- 2021
Clutch replaced- 2021
Cv boots and rear wheels bearings-2021
Motor mount- 2021
Rear brake rebuild (shoes, hardware, wheel cylinders)-2021
Tie rods both sides-2021
Inner and outer front wheel bearings-2021
New thermostat - 2021
New 3 window tent canvas -2021
New LED headlights from GoWesty- 2021
Shift bushings from front to back - 2020
Gas tank cleaning and reseal -2020
Fuel pump - 2020
All fuels lines hard and soft- 2020
General Grabber A/T tires -2020
New windshield - 2020
The factory refrigerator works as it should on battery power and on power at a campsite. The water pump for the sink hasn't worked since I've owned it. The propane stove is all there and intact, but the propane tank isn't on the Vanagon. I do however have the propane tank, I just didn't feel comfortable taking into the backcountry given the location that the tank mounts to. Plus, I never wanted the stink of cooked food to linger inside the van while we were trying to sleep.
Things that need to be addressed.
Drivers side window pops off track when rolling up if you don't guide it. Speedo and clock illumination lights need the contacts cleaned or replaced. The blower motor for the defrost does not work, but heat still runs off of engine RPMs and gets hot when needed (perks of aircooled!). There are some bubbling spots around the windows and one spot where a hole had form on the driver's side rear quarter window. I sanded the metal down bare, treated the rust with acid, and primed over it. I then filled the whole with windshield polyurethane (I'm a glass technician) to avoid any water getting into the hole and creating the common seam rust that these vans get. The paint isn't perfect, there are some spots where it's chipped and been scratched on adventures. Drivers sear needs to be re-upholstered, passenger looks good. Interior panel on sliding door needs replaced as well as material on panel next to rear seat. I've slept 3 kids in this thing many of nights and it does show some wear from those adventures. Washer fluid pump hasn't worked since I've owned it.
Included with sell or trade...
