1983 Land Rover Defender 110 3.5 Liter V8 68,000 miles $21,500

1983 Land Rover Defender 110 SOLD

North America Overland is happy to offer for sale this 1983 Land Rover Defender 110. This Rover is being sold on consignment for one of our customers. It was imported last year from the UK and was previously used by a ballooning company. It has 68,000 original miles and has been well kept for most of its life. It has a 3.5 liter V8, 4 speed transmission and full time 4 wheel drive. This is a nice unmolested Land Rover which is hard to find as most of these early 110s have been rebuilt or modified. The Rover is registered and is currently at our shop in Monroe CT, it can be seen by appointment by calling Mike at 203-996-5008.

Body
The body has most of its original paint the only exception is that the front of the right front fender and the top of the right side of the bulkhead have been repainted. The paint color is Rowan brown with Limestone top and wheels, the paint is still presentable and has a nice shine to it. There are paint chips and small dents here and there and almost no corrosion on the aluminum body panels. The bulkhead is in great shape with no through rot and the original floors which is very unusual, bulkheads tend to rot out badly. There is some minor rot on the bottom of the doors but very easily repairable also the right side T post has a small hole and the steel beads on the front sills are rusty. I would say that this Rover is well above average rust wise and the rust it does have can be easily repaired.

Engine
The engine is a 3.5 liter all aluminum V8 making about 115 hp and 200 ft lbs of torque. The motor has been recently tuned up. When I changed the valve cover gaskets I did notice a lot of sludge and some attempt should be made to desludge the engine. The compression test revealed nice even compression and no signs of head gasket or valve problems. The motor runs smooth and quiet.

Transmission and Transfer Case
The transmission is the LT95 4 speed, one of the strongest transmissions Land Rover has ever made. It does not have an overdrive so about 65mph is the comfortable cruising speed on the highway. The transmission has recently had its oil changed. The clutch is good and has had the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder recently replaced. The throw out bearing is a little bit noisy. There is a lot of drivetrain slop which seems to be common on these early Defender drivetrains.

Axles
The Rover has the 1 ton Salisbury dana 60 rear axle and the Rover front axle with 1 ton CV joints. The gear oil has been changed in both differentials, the front wheel bearing have been repacked with Mobil 1 synthetic grease and new hub seals installed front and rear. The tire are 235 85 16 General Grabber the same tires that come on new defenders they have lots of tread left.

Suspension
The suspension is original except for the shocks, it has the factory load leveler in the back. The bushings are in good shape and not too badly deteriorated, The Rover rides really well, the coil springs are a huge improvement over the leaf springs of the prior year Rovers.

Frame
The frame is in great shape it is all original with no repairs or patches. The rear crossmember and outriggers are all in great shape.

Interior
The interior is all original tan Moorland cloth, there is only one rip in the back of one of the second row seats. The Rover is a 12 seater but only the front seats have seatbelts, we can easily add seatbelts to the rest of the seats. The dash is in great shape and all the heater controls and gages work properly.

Steering
The rover has power steering and amazingly it does not leak. The steering is tight and responsive.

Brakes
There are power assisted disc brakes on the front and drums on the back. The rear brakes were rebuilt with new shoes, wheel cylinders and the drums resurfaced.

Electrical
Everything works well on the Rover with the exception of the radio. There does not appear to have been any splices in the wiring harness or signs of any short circuits or melted wires.

Fuel System
The fuel filter has been changed. The Rover has a 20 gallon tank and a extendable fuel filler neck for filling from jerry cans.

Outfitting
The North America Overland shop truck was identical to this Rover when we first got it, so included are some comparison photos in case the new owner would like to modify this Rover similarly. The main modifications to ours included a 300tdi engine, 5 speed transmission, rear disc brakes, left hand drive conversion, newer roll up window doors, roof rack, auxiliary lighting and dual batteries.

Sorry to dig up a year old post, but I have just done business with North American Overland and have to say that it is a very reputable operation. I am posting today on the off chance that someone searching old posts in the near future stumbles upon this info.
I had traveled to Connecticut to pick up a vehicle on consignment that I had just purchased. I made the decision to buy purely by pictures, video, and Mike's detailed description. It was an unexpected pleasure to have the opportunity to check out North American Overland's operation.

While I was there 2 other customers came through, one was the owner of a Rover restored by North American Overland. The vehicle was running rough, Mike took a quick look under the hood, made an assessment and swapped out the carburetor in the amount of time it took for me to exchange contact info with the gentleman. With the Rover back to good health, he left with a smile. This was an example of stellar customer service.

I enjoyed my time talking to Mike about his operation and the extents that he goes to in order to create a Rover capable of confident Overland Exploration. The shop is very organized and clean. I was impressed with how well the compliment of parts are kept in tidy fashion.

If you were in the market for a fine Rover or to engage a full restoration, give North America Overland a look.
