I'm working on a compact expedition platform based on a small toyota pickup.
I've started the project on a 1984 Toyota pickup. It's got a solid axle, manual transmission and 22r motor. I'm a little wary of the lack of airbags and side impact beams and I'm thinking about upgrading to a late 90's tacoma with independent front suspension for a more enjoyable on road experience.
Anyway, I've been putting this rack / camper shell together for the last few days. Photos attached.
It's basically a custom take on a contractors lumber rack but with a more low profile shape. Plywood panels hinge out from both sides into tables for food prep / map reading / work tables etc.
The tables have great hinges that allow them to fold all the way to the sides to allow access to gear in the bed.
I'm not sure about how to proceed with camping quarters. I could store less gear in the bed and make it a sleeping quarters or simply pack a tent to allow for more gear.
The roof will have a basket style rack, CB radio antenna, spare tire and space for general storage. I was even contemplating building a hinged roof camper off this design.
Ideas, feedback? This is my first real post on the forum, great to meet you all.
