Hello,

I'm new around here, currently on the hunt for a 4x4 vehicle for outdoor excursions, nothing too crazy. Anyway I just got home from checking out a 1985 Land Cruiser turbo diesel here in Hawaii. The truck was bought by the current owners in Oregon, she then took it on a surf trip all over the West Coast. Fast forward a year later - she's selling it to pay for her wedding, only thing she's done is put a new clutch in. The truck was from Canada originally - it has about 480,000kms on it. Some minor rust on the fenders, nothing too crazy. Drives nice, A/C works, seats are in decent shape. They are asking $12k or best offer. Can you guys offer any advice on these? I'm searching and reading up on what I can but I thought this would be a good place to get some info. Here are some pictures of the LC:

let me know if you guys have any questions, thanks for your help!

my advise is not buy a heavy truck with an anemic motor if you live on a mountain. seriously, that truck is slow. real slow. useless with heavy load up hill slow.

I dont know if I would go that far. Its no speedster thats for sure but theres more than enough there, with the right gearing, to get around. Not to mention a turbo kit really wakes the motor up. The 3B is a great and very simple motor known for longevity. If you think the 3B is anemic, a 2H must be equally so as the power isnt that far off.

You need to do a compression test and dropping the oil pan to check out the main bearings wouldnt be a bad idea either. That truck, with the obvious rust, is NOT worth $12k. Not even close. You can find rusty diesels all over coming from Canada. Pass and keep looking. I would offer $6k, if the motor checks out, tops.

Yeah, but can you find them all over Hawaii? :)

Having lived on Maui for a little while (not exactly a Kama'aina, but close enough :)), I can tell you there's a standard markup for most things that have to be brought to the islands.

Good advice on checking out the drivetrain, though.

Listen I own the exact same truck,I will not part with it. The 3B is under powered and slow but are you in a rush?. Mine does what ever i ask of it over and over its by far the best vehicle I've haves own. That said is it worth 12G's no not really, but I too live on a island and know about the pricing and supply/demand. Its worth what your willing to pay!. Good luck with your hunt.

I agree with the previous threads regarding price. 4x4 Toyota's tend to fetch a premium over there.
I think a BJ60 would be well suited for Hawaii.

When we lived on Kauai our FJ40 was the perfect island vehicle. It was slow which was fine since we were on "Island Time" :)

When we moved back to the mainland the 40 seemed a bit out of place on the crazy SoCal freeways.
Now it pretty much sits in our garage

How much is diesel over on Oahu?

That's a great question. Might not even warrant the premium price if diesel is uber-expensive.

Right, and how big is which ever island he is on to justify the added expense of a diesel 60? Its not. $4k can buy an FJ60 in better condition.

My 60 was a BJ60. It was a great motor and with a turbo kit (readily available from a few different sources) pulls numbers up to 130 hp and about 220 ft lbs and do it for thousands and thousands of miles.

Slow and fast is in the mind of the beholder.Drive the bloody thing and decide for yourself.
However the age ,the mileage, the rust and the price does not scream BARGAIN
