For Sale: 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 ... $3,500 firm ... Mesa, AZ
I love this truck, but finances force sale. I bought it in 2005 for $3,500 from the original owner, an elderly physician in Tucson. It was bone stock at that point. I have put a LOT of time and money into this rig but the economy sucks and I have to sell it. You don't find vintage Land Cruisers on every corner and you sure as hell don't find them without rust very often. Even still, I'm not the only one suffering and people just aren't spending what they used to on older TLCs. So I'm selling the truck for $3,500. Now my wife can really give me hell for all the money and time I've "wasted".
This is a good, dependable truck. It has been my daily driver. I'm an archaeologist and work throughout the Southwest, particularly in AZ and NM, so I've done a lot of driving back and forth. The truck has never let me down. That said, this is a 25 year old truck. Please don't expect a showroom vehicle. The original owner said he never took it off road and I believe him. I can't say the same thing, but I'm not a rock-crawlin', dune-blastin', testosterone freak. I take the family camping, drive to remote sites, and get myself to the office. Always serviced. I have receipts for all work done, even by the original owner. I broke it in for you and worked out all the kinks.
I need the money, so I won't consider trades. If I didn't need the money, I'd be keeping this truck. I also know that I'm selling the truck for less than it's worth, so I'm going to stand firm on the price. If you're interested, please check it out and decide whether to buy it or not. I don't want to stand around listening to people tell me everything that isn't sparkly and new. I know it isn't sparkly and new.
I have a clear AZ title with current registration and insurance. I'll take cash or cashier's check. The truck is in Mesa, AZ. I'm not interested in shipping it, but if you arrange for door to door service, I'll be here to drive it onto the trailer. It goes without saying that I can't and won't offer any type of warranty. I'm an honest guy and below I list all the problems I know about. If you have specific questions or would like specific photos, please let me know.
I work more than I should and while at work I can't use internet for personal business, so please EMAIL me at MIMBRES@ASU.EDU instead of PM'ing me or going through this thread. I'll update the thread as possible to publicly answer questions that people send me. You can also call me at (480) 375-0983. I'm happy to show the truck to you (or a friend if you're out of town) and I would encourage you to have a mechanic check it out.

Thank you for looking. I'm going to give my Expo comrades a week's head start before Craigslist.

General:
- Stock 2F engine
- 210K miles, good compression, all seals just replaced (rear main, front engine, side engine, valve cover, exhaust manifold), new belts, no leaks, no smoking, no knocking, no problems ... but I wouldn't enter any pink-slip races or offer to tow a yacht
- Stock carb just rebuilt
- Stock 4-speed transmission
- Stock transfer case.
- Never wrecked. No bondo. Straight body w/a couple minor dings.
- Really good, original paint (gun metal grey)
- A/C, PS, PB
- Yokohama Geolander tires (31x10.50R15) w/lifetime warranty
- 2 full-size spares on Land Cruiser rims (1 is excellent shape; other is new)
New:
- Old Man Emu heavy-duty Dakar leaf springs (front and rear; 2.5" lift)
- Longer, braced spring shackles (1" lift)
- Pro Comp ES9000 gas shocks (front)
- Clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, master cylinder, and slave cylinder
- JTO Saginaw power steering conversion w/remanufactured PS pump just installed
- Heavy-duty radiator
- Brakes
- Upgrade to R134a refrigerant (obviously charged at the same time)
- Fuse link, heater bypass hose, fan clutch, wheel bearings, hubs repacked,
Other:
- Custom front hoop bumper
- Kenwood AM/FM/CD/Cassette (see below) deck w/6-disc CD changer
- Rugged (though unmatched) covers (new) on front bucket seats
- Good glass, limo tint
Known issues:
- Truck is not currently emissions compliant. Has all components except for smog pump and catalytic converter.
- Butterfly valve in exhaust manifold is busted. It's making a rattling noise and there is some loss of power. I have a brand new JTO header that comes with the truck to replace the manifold; just needs installation.
- Plastic on passenger side of stock rear bumper is ripped
- Chrome gutter trim is missing
- No driver's side door mirror (passenger side mirror temporarily mounted on driver's door)
- Tape 1 of a Tony Hillerman book-on-tape is (permanently) lodged in cassette deck
- Steering box (not PS pump!) is leaking a little, but not a lot
- Front ball joints are leaking a little (not a lot)
- Rubber bushings on left front stabilizer are shot ($36 @ SOR)
- Driver's door sags about 1/4". Noticeable but not problematic.
- Water temperature gauge not working
- Headliner and rear upholstery are solid but could be cleaned. Tears in bucket seats, but no springs jabbing you in the ***. Door panels are pretty good. Crappy stock speakers still play music, but...
- 1 small chip in windshield and tint scratched on right rear window
- Gas support for rear lift gate doesn't work all that well
***NOTE: Winch, rack, roof mounts, and tent are NOT included in the sale***
