1991 Montero

So I ended up stumbling upon a 91 with 116k on the clock. New engine, radiator, alternator and water pump. I bought it from the original owner and it's in mint condition. I am new to these rigs so I am unfamiliar with a lot of outfitters. I am planning on putting on a new suspension, OME, safari snorkel, tires and wheels, front bumper and roof rack. Any suggestions on good racks, etc?

Racks range from cheap to $$$$$$. Asking a point blank recommendation is like asking what's the best car? Depends. And that's my answer based on your question. :)

Want a better answer? Pleas tell us your budget, what you want it to carry, what kind of wheeling you'll be doing, etc...

Here are some pictures. I haven't, as of yet, pulled the trigger on her. I am very tempted, but I still have been looking at some FJ60's. What do you guys think? The cost of entry is so cheap I can afford to mod it out quite a bit.5Ea5R55Mb3E13I13Jbc74bcbfcb28dc631a0e.jpg5G45Ec5J73M83J13H8c6t9fe75f99b3701345.jpg5I75Y55E23Eb3F83Hcc6t173ef8993aac11a0.jpg5Nc5Hf5M23n13F53H8c6t58fce19517201c4f.jpg5T25F25J13K13G43Ncc6t8a95bf12db11170a.jpg

Cheap to enter with a New engine, radiator, alternator and water pump. - Sounds like a great deal. What happened to the original motor to need all that after only 116K?

When I bought my first Montero, I was also looking for an FJ (FJ62) and had the trooper for my alternate choice. Saw a 90 at the back of a Chevy dealership and thought it was a trooper.

In hindsight, I'm glad I chose the Montero over the FJ. My understanding from speaking with other owners is the older FJ's would be too big, heavy, and under-powered in stock form for my off road needs. Plus it's nice to get decent mileage w/ the stock v6 and 32's/33's which the FJ would have struggled to match.

I will say that I do still love the look of the FJ62 and it wouldn't be surprising if I bought one for street or light off road use (minimal mods required).

I am developing a roof rack for these right now.
As well as sliders.
I have a 1991 and a 1989 to build off of.
Just a matter of time.

Rear and front bumpers are lower on the list of priorities but that to is going to happen.

Keep me posted on that stuff for sure!

Something else to think about with regard to the Mitsubishis, they tended to use the same engine (or form factor) across their model line, which means there are probably more engine upgrade options than most.

The 2.6L Astron 4-banger was used in the Starion/Conquest, which opens up fuel injection and turbocharging options. Since the StarQuest community also got the venerable 4G63T Sirius engine in some markets, which is also found in the Eclipse/Talon/Laser AND every Lanver Evolution rally car for 9 generations, there is plenty of tech out there regarding engine swaps to the smaller, more capable 2.0L. (People are making over 1200 *wheel* horsepower on these engines today. 300hp is maybe a US$1500 project.)

On top of that, a lot of people in the 4G63 community ditch the 2.0 for the 2.4 bottom end. We tend to mix-and-match. 2.0 crank in a 2.4, 2.4 crank in a 2.0. Stoked, de-stroked. All been done and just a Google away, really. And, when you think about how the 4D55 and 4D56 turbo diesels are pretty much a direct bolt-on (as far as I know), there's a lot of OEM quality engine swap options for whatever powerband you're after to consider.

Less familiar to me, but still nice to know and think about, the 6G7X V6 series shares a decent bit of kit with the 3000GT VR4/Dodge Stealth R/T, which was a 300hp, all-wheel drive super cruiser. They have an aftermarket all their own.

Of course, there's always the cognitive dissonance in effect when considering putting three bills into a vehicle you paid less than one for, but it's food for thought.

Fangers, I am very interested in sliders and a roof rack. I don't have the rig yet, but I was wondering if you could give me a couple of measurements? I need to know the measurement across the width of the roof, driver to passenger outside gutter? And what is the height of the roof line from bottom of trough in gutter to top of roof? Thanks!

DR1665, yeah I am actually very interested in doing a diesel conversion so I am going to look into this.

Working on the gutter clamps design now, Have yet to take the measurements.

You can use trammels clamped to a straight edge to get the measurements you want, the roof line is not consistent so the measurements I take may not be the measurements you want.

I would focus on the suspension and tires first, I have been riding around on the stock 27" tires and it is not so nice compared the 32" tires on my 1989. I will swap those this week end and enjoy the instant lift I will get along with the smoother ride. The suspension on both vehilces is worn out so I can not swap anything over to help the ride in my 1991 but I am in the process of acquiring the shocks, springs and torsion bars from Sierra Expeditions.

The ride in a Montero that has worn shocks is a bit bouncy and disconcerting. Best to take care of that first if needed.

Believe me I am planning on taking care of that first. What exact size is the best for these rigs? I don't want to go too big where my power, mpg and movement suffers.

I was a huge 4g63 guy and now am a huge Diesel fan... 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine would also be my choice. Clean ride, I say get it and make it your own.

Finally in 1988, a 3.0-litre SOHC V6 engine was made available, alongside a 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine, with the first 4x4 intercooler. This translated to better acceleration in mid to high rev ranges. The long-wheelbase models got a coil link suspension system for better ride comfort and off-road ability.
