What do you think of a 1993 Mitsubishi Canter with 4d33 engine 4.2 liter non turbo for an expedition vehicle platfom?
Manual, how light? Is there a plug and play turbo for the engine how much difference will that make.Automatic or manual, that NA engine has no usable power so build light.
This is manual transmission 5 speed and no turbo. I been reading up on the turbo i could not find a plug and play Turbo for this engine. The first canter I had was a'96 if I recall. It had a non wastegate turbo with an automatic. This was a box truck. If you started out uphill there were times it never spooled the turbo and could not accelerate to more than 5 or 7 MPH till it leveled a bit.
I only drove a non turbo manual trans once, I knew I did not ever want one being I live in the hills.
The later 90's got a wastegate and work fine.
Also had time in an Izusu car hauler, great rig and nice engine gear ratio combination.
I would recommend driving the one you are looking at to see if it is what you want to build on, I also fully expect you will get more replies and better opinions.
FWIW I have close to 30 Mitsubishi's and drive a 49 year old Galant so I am no basher of this mark.
4d33 came with factory turbo?I would look in the salvage yard for a takeoff factory unit.
you mean swap out the whole engine with one that is already turbo charged?Need to look at other displacements and years of the 4D3X series. I do not know diesels well and personally would not add a turbo to a non turbo engine since the injection pump is not designed for it. "Lack of ambient pressure compensation"
What I would do is scrounge around and find a later engine with a wastegated turbo .Swap the whole thing in which pretty well insures you have it right. Now if your going to be playing down at sea level this may not be an issue but I would not enjoy climbing up to altitude on a hot day and finding you are kind of left with low gear only.
