I just bought it, so I do not know if it was running hot. It seemed to run fine and at normal temps the few times I did drive it. No idea on the coolant usage. Like I mentioned, I had accounted for an axle rebuild and valve cover gasket / other seal replacement, but not a top end rebuild. I have had it for less than a week. Took it to the shop today, got the diagnosis and made the decision to sell it. I have not even registered it.

Miles are 204k.

Just to clarify, it runs fine /drives ok. The headgasket is leaking, but I'm not sure how much. It could go for another 5 miles or 50k miles, just don't know. Trying to give full disclosure.

How did the shop test for blown headgasket? Is it a shop you trust? If you aren't using coolant, overheating and the oil looks good it might not be a headgasket. If its leaking coolant to the outside of the engine and making puddles on the ground make sure all your hoses are good, Landcruisers have a PHH(pesky heater hose) that likes to leak and its hard to see where its coming from, yours is due on mileage and age if it hasn't been done yet. You might want to get a second opinion on the headgasket. Ask around on here or a local forum and see where the Landcruiser guys are taking their stuff and then go there yourself. I am a mechanic and have done lots of headgaskets and they usually have some driveability concerns to go with them eg: milky oil, overheats easily, blows radiator caps off, bursts radiator hoses, splits radiator end tanks, runs rough, has no power and misses under load, uses coolant, white smoke out my exhaust even when after driving a few miles, etc, etc.

Not sure. I didn't even know it was leaking until I took it to a shop. They said there were HCs in the coolant, overflow bottle was empty and radiator a little low but no other info.

I diagnosed it the best I could before I bought it. I planned on rebuilding the front axle and addressing some of the leaks immediately. I didn't expect head gasket work, so I made the decision to put it back up for sale.

On another note, most of these are due for a head gasket anyway, so might as well get one for cheap and replace it.

I took it to a local shop that I trust and is very reputable. The overflow tank was empty, radiator a little low and there were HCs in the coolant. I have no idea if is the head gasket, just taking the shop at their word. The PHH needs to be replaced. No obvious driveability concerns. I have driven it 50 miles or so of mixed city / highway and no issues. Does not overheat. Runs a tiny bit rough, but this could be due to the original (1996) secondary ignition.
