1996 Montero hydraulic lifter question

I am somewhat mechanical but this seems a bit difficult but on my Montero one of the lifters has started to make some noise. I talked with a mechanic and he told me it is a long process to replace the lifter so my question is, is this something I might be able to do or do I need a professional Mitsubishi mechanic to replace them ? Thanks in advance for your help.

Also I know with some older fords you can drive with a noisy lifter for some time and it should be ok, is that the same with my montero ?

When I bought my Montero, I was able to get a great deal because the engine was making the noise. I took the gamble, and I was right. Give it a shot if you haven't.

if you dont take care of that could that cause a blown gasket..cause mine had a rythmic tick after i changed spark plugs and wires and now im replacing a headgasket

No it will not blow a head gasket. Why are you replacing a head gasket?

Try the above trick, in most cases it will fix the problem.

To answer your original question, you'll need to remove the valve covers and cams to access the lifters. Not exactly hard... but not ideal either.

Grasscat's right. It won't blow a head gasket. Not directly related. Lifter noise has to do with insufficient oil reaching the lifters which ultimately causes added wear on them but that won't cause your head gaskets to fail.

Basically your head gaskets sit between the block and heads and create a seal so that your coolant doesn't leak.

well i had a rhythmic tick shortly after replacing my plugs and wires and it never went away(and being in southern Al it quickly became labeled as and "International Harvester") Readers Digest Version: On may way home from Mobile it shut off completely...towed it home went to start it Battery shot sparks, charged battery, started it, Loud knock on the passenger side where the tick came from...dad said blown gasket...started taking it apart found oil in the water and water in the oil...but no real carnage so i figure it had bad seals to begin with.
