1997 EB 350 4x4 quiggley, v-10 gas, 251Kmiles, started life as a spormobile, slowely morphed into a pop top colorado camper van....Transmission is shuddering at slight inclines.....Any thoughts? where to start?

regularly serviced during the life of the vehicle. transmission never replaced, engine replace @ ~181Kmiles - during drive where shuddering was first encountered I checked tranny fluid, slightly low, added some fluid, perceived improvement but not perfect.....Also percieved improvement with "OD off" engaged....Going to start poking around some more - all thoughts & advice welcome. 237Kmiles seems like a lot....Not against replacing tranny....who/where/what type?

Tranny is E40D modified slightly by Quiggley when vehicle was new as part of the 4WD conversion.

Just removed a small piece of gravel wedged up between the housing and the shift linkage. Hopeful but not overly optimistic.....going for a test drive.....

I was having shuddering at slight inclines with my 2002 5.4 v8. I thought it was transmission but after a quick search on the internet, I found that it was a spark plugs/coils issue. Sure enough, one coil was bad and it was just misfiring.
It might not be what you are experiencing but it's worth rule it out.

The E40D in my 96 E350 lasted to 91,000 miles before the front pump went out.
90,000 miles seems to be about where the problems begin on one.
Overheating is common, mine did not have a trans temp gauge until I replaced the transmission.
It still runs a bit warm but now when it does I just drop out of overdrive and it cools off.

fluid level good

back from quick test drive IT WAS THE PIECE OF GRAVEL!.....Um....actually not.....no improvement with gravel removed. engine idles smooth in Park and Neutral, there's a slight vibe when standing still in D/R/2/1 shuddering worst up slight incline. perceived improvement with OD off seems to have diminished. Also edited fist post actual miles is 252K......What vendors and types of transmissions should I research if replacement ends up seeming the way to go?

When mine went out it left me stranded about 15 miles From Silver City, NM.
I had it towed to the Ford dealer there. They were happy to work on it and got it right in to check.
Since I was at the dealer I let them get a Ford re-manufactured transmission. It came with a 3 year 75,000 mile warranty.
They make you replace the cooler as well, but won't let you go with an aftermarket bigger one to keep the warranty.
Cost was around $2300 out the door.
I installed a Scan Gauge after to keep an eye on trans temps, it still runs a bit hot at times, but now I know when that happens and dropping out of overdrive brings the temps down 15 degrees.

I just hooked up a scangauge and it indicated PO305 (misfire in Cylinder 5) - going to research my records and see if pligs/coil packs have been done recently....I kind of hope thats the problem but not sure yet.....Keep the thoughts and tips coming!
