1998 (Gen II) Montero A/T tranny oil

Hello guys!

Can anyone please confirm what ATF oil I have to get for the Montero tranny?

I've read that this tranny uses a particular type of fluid, and damage may occuer if the incorrect oil is not used.

Can the A/T light turn on while going up a steep climb? I'm planning on going to a restaurant here in PR that only 4x4 can access them (VERY steep, long climb), and I would like to drain the tranny and make sure that I have the correct oil in it.

Anyway, thanks for the input.

I'll have too look that up as I don't have an answer for you. One of the GenII guys will let you know I'm sure. The light shouldn't come on unless there is an electrical problem with the tranny or if it starting to over heat. That is not good. You will have to post pics of this restaurant for the rest of us to see. I have heard about it and seen Andrew Zimmern go there, and I really want to check it out. Keep us posted.

I wish I could help you for a gen II. It may be possible that they're the same as the gen III transmission requirements. The service manual for the gen III calls for DIAMOND ATF SP III or equivalent.

Jorge,

According to the owners Manual for my 96SR it suggest ATF DEXRON II. I'm not sure but your 98 might have the same tranny so it can also use Dexron II or Dexron III or even IV whichever is the current lube available.

In case it's not clear the later types of Dexron replaces the older types & is backward compatible.

I am in the same dilemma. The manual for my 95 Montero SR says use Diamond SP atf or Dexron II. The Kragen guy looked it up and said use ATF+3. A search of the internet shows alot of ATF's cover SP II and SP III but no mention of just SP. You would suspect II and III supercede SP but then why do they all list the II and III, and I know this isn't always true as with manual trans oil you do not want to use GL-5 where GL-4 was spec'd. I am going to use SP-III which I got from the dealer but I am still uneasy about it being the right stuff. Buy the way I even called Mobil 1 as that was what I wanted to use and it stated it was compatible with SP-II and III and they told me not to use their product. So what are you guys using and for how long? Any problems?

xped,

I don't remember exactly but ATF+3 may be usable. Regardless of that, I'd contact the maker of the aforementioned ATF+3 and ask them in writing if it can be used "in place of Dextron II in your 1995 3.0L Montero". This way, if they tell you yes and a problem occurs because of it, then they can be held liable for a likely costly transmission repair.

HTH.

I was going through the same dilemma... I used to buy a Chrysler Import specced fluid, that was equivalent to diamond SPII, and DexII. Can't find it anymore, but I did find a Castrol Formula that seems to fit the bill...

"Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle" fluid

Here's what the manufacturer claims, in terms of specs...

* Recommended for use in vehicles that require:
o Honda, Acura — ATF–Z1 (except in CVTs)
o Toyota, Lexus — Type T, T–III, T–IV
o Nissan, Infiniti — Matic–D, Matic–J
o BMW — LA2634, LT71141
o Mitsubishi — Diamond SP–II, SP–III
o Hyundai — SP–II, SP–III
o Volvo

So it appears to fit the bill for our trannnies. I didn't take the pan off. I just removed the drain plug, got out about 4L, topped up, used it for a few days, and then repeated the process. Done this three times so far, and I think I've probably got almost all new fluid in there now.

This is my first auto that I've used for towing, so I'm a little paranoid. I'm currently shopping for a transmission temperature gauge to fuel my paranoia. :sombrero:

The All famous "Cerro de Nandy" how well did the montero made it up there?

Not really here
I just replaced my trans fluid with some regular dextron III and it seems to be just fine. I ran it around off road today (through a river and in the sand as well as in some mud) and it never skipped a beat! I did manage to get stuck on a hill though. Bottomed out on the skid plates. Alldata shows that diamond and dex II are what it takes, so since dex III is equivalent to dexII (or better) I'd say save yourself some money and get a couple gallons of dexIII and be done with it.
